I asked because U of U is a public university and as far as I can tell they don’t have, and appear to never have had a religious affiliation.

Holy War is the name of the Brigham Young v. Utah rivalry. I know what you're thinking, though. How can Brigham Young v. Utah call their rivalry game a name derived from the Crusades, but Oregon v. Oregon State cannot be called The Great Oregon Civil War? And the answer is very simple. It is because Oregon State is stupid. I can find no reference to the term "Holy War" in any of Utah's official pre- or postgame notes. It is universally called the "rivalry game." Is Utah stupid? Doesn't stop most fans calling it the Holy War. Just as most OSU fans still call the game against Oregon the Civil War. Holy War is the rivalry's name. You can look it up on Sports Illustrated or USA Today as that name or on any media. The Civil War was scrubbed by all media. Advertisers cannot use it. And there is no replacement name for the Civil War. If they are as stupid as Oregon State, Utah is stupid. I just don't think that they are. It's about money. They get it. Oregon State is where we are because of stupid decisions like 86ing the Civil War moniker without a viable replacement.

Are the Ducks where they are because they likewise are no longer calling it the Civil War?

They can afford to be stupid. Oregon State needs every penny, nickel, and dime that comes near them.
