And, in the gameday video from the Sean Mannion/ Brandon Cooks era - the stands were mostly empty. Would expect the same today! 😎 Although on the flip side of looking bad, "mostly empty" (I think there was 44k posted for that game?!) Cal actually averages 74% capacity of a 63k stadium. That is more fans than OSU will ever seat again.
Highly skewed by larger stadiums in the SEC/B10, but... In 2023, the average attendance for FBS football games was 41,867 per game, which is the highest since 2017. This is the first time in a number of years that FBS attendance has increased in consecutive seasons, since 2008. Michigan: Averaged 109,971 fans at The Big House Penn State: Averaged 108,409 fans in Happy Valley Houston: Led all FBS teams in attendance gains, with an average increase of 42% at TDECU Stadium USF: Saw an average increase of 28% Maryland: Saw an average increase of 26% Colorado: Saw an average increase of 24% 25 FBS stadiums: Averaged an attendance rate of 100% or higher Attendance #s are generally BS, including OSU's. Two games ago they announced a # about 1k over a sellout. Last week a few hundred short of one. The 2022 # given out was over 31k, if I'm remembering, about 3k over what was available during construction. For 2023 OSU gave out the season average of 36,969, 104% of capacity. All blatantly false. So, I imagine most schools do the same?! However, no matter the #s given, in the forseeable future an OSU sellout will never match the FBS attendance average. OSU may mostly fill Reser, but at 32-35k+ I'm not sure that's something to crow about in terms of overall #s!? Nor belittle other programs with smaller stadiums. Personally I don't care about opponents attendance. Their game day atmosphere is their problem. The worse it is the better for OSU. If the tickets are purchased, but the butts are not in the seats - I really do not care how many tickets they sold.
A timeless axiom in business, and I agree with it, give me a venue with a seating capacity of 500 and it is mostly full, over venue with 1,000 seats and half full. The optics are just bad. If they posted 44k for that game, it was a bunch of well to do lazy no shows, which as far as I am concerned, is no better than unsold empty seats, in terms of gameday atmosphere, and eyeballs watching on TV.

That was a 1-5 Cal team with a true freshman Jared Goff. Better days were ahead, but not in 2013. 1-11. Probably the worst Bears team in at least a century. Hah, many Cal fans would disagree. And since I come from a family of them, I can attest to that. Rarely do I have an opportunity to correct Wilky, but most would argue the end of the Holmoe era was worst for them. In 2001 I believe they only got one win, last game of season against Rutgers or something. 2001 Cal went 1-10. No games against FCS teams. Cal beat Rutgers in Piscataway by 10. Three losses decided by fewer than 14 points: Washington (31-28), Oregon State(19-10), and Stanford (35-28). No losses by more than 41 points. 2013 Cal went 1-11. The lone win was by seven against a Portland State Vikings team that finished ninth in the Big Sky. No losses decided by fewer than 14 points. Stanford 63 - Cal 13 (most lopsided victory in the rivalry's 132-year history). To add to that, Holmoe's trash season led to Jeff Tedford, and an 82-57 record over the subsequent 11 years. 2013 was the first post-Tedford season. In the 11 years since (2013-2023), Cal is a humorously awful 55-73. The only thing, wherein it could possibly be argued that 2001 worse was that Cal went on probation in 2002. But, if you are talking about on-the-field results, from an unbiased observer (me), 2013 was much worse than 2001 in pretty much every way.
