Just heard about this in the O-live site. Was by design during the whoregon - OSU game at the end and confirmed. I guess in rare situation it would work like this.

I still dislike Whoregon as a "slam" against the University of Oregon. Especially because that makes the Beavs Whoregon State. Still weird.

Still not as bonkers as Chip Kelly (in his NFL days) having the punting unit hold the entire defense since a game can end on an offensive penalty. That said, I would expect this loop hole to close in the next rules meeting.

I am still trying to decide how to think about this notion of "hacking" the rules and noting that a deliberate 12th man on the field can yield a winning outcome. Oh, well, better it happened down the road than at OSU.
While I am trying to hold Lanning in the highest respect, his way is not very sportsmanlike - obligatory Princess Bride reference to resolve the dilemma.....

I see it as just a really sharp move by Lanning in a huge moment. If the powers that be want to change the rule then that's fine but until then it was a great move by a coach who clearly understands the rules of the game.
