Good article. Data-driven arguments and decisions are always more meaningful than hollow rhetorical opinions. It should be obvious that the new Pac-12 seven is a better conference than the new MWC seven and various other conferences. I suspect some of the targets that have turned down the Pac-12 with knee-jerk decisions may reconsider once they conduct more detailed analysis. I can't imagine why UNLV would want to stay in the MWC; seems very short-sighted and foolish.

At some point the perenial bottom feeders in the P4 conferences are gonna be left dangling in the wind.

It's interesting to me that Purdue, with all its Big 10 money, comes to Corvallis and gets their ass handed to them. OSU has had far less relative conference financial for a long time AND has a team that has just been pillaged by both NIL and conference re-alignment. It has to be pretty disheartening. It speaks to factors that clearly point out that there are factors in play well beyond financial advantages.

That conference simulator they link to is a handy tool once you figure out how to manipulate it. The new Pac is pretty solidly situated in the middle of the fairly large gap between the G5 conferences and the P4 conferences based on the last decade or two.
Adding Texas State doesn't really move the needle. Adding Memphis, Tulane and South Florida moves the needle closer to the P4. Would probably need to add a few more select teams on top of that to get it even closer. There is a clear gap between the G5 schools and what the new Pac is on the longer term.

The Pac 12 admission agreement executed initially by four MWC schools explains why a reverse merger was not in the cards for the Pac 12 and MWC. This type of start-up/admission agreement is unusual and would likely not work for the entire MWC.
The Pac 12 invited MWC programs with the biggest football budgets ($22 million average) and left the smaller programs behind ($13 million average).
The programs that accepted the invite to the Pac 12 are expected to work together to grow their budgets. Trying to get five programs to work towards this end will be challenging. Working with 12 would be impossible.

The Athletic guy doesn't want to see the P2 or P4 break away, so it's up to the G5 teams to "cooperate." He means, just bend over, take your medicine and be happy about it.
It was perfectly OK for the P4 guys to change leagues and "do what was in their own bests interests" and destroy existing leagues, but G5 guys like us, Wazzu and the MWC 5 can't look out for our best interests, even when no league is being destroyed (the MWC will easily live on).
F that guy and the horse he rode in on.
