any thoughts about adding Eastern Washington to the new Pac-12?
Super strong FCS school with red turf field. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

any thoughts about adding Eastern Washington to the new Pac-12? Super strong FCS school with red turf field. Seems like a no-brainer to me. absolutely not. the jump from FCS to D-1 is astronomical. North Dakota State, a FCS that has won like 17 national championships or whatever lost to a bad Colorado team in week 1. sure, every now and then an FCS team surprises a D-1 team. but it is always a surprise. They would be an absolute doormat year in and year out in the new Pac. Sorry but it is true. Even with a 10-15 million bump in funding. but more to the point. Spokane is the 67th ranked Media Market in the US. Eastern Washington University itself is a $32 million endowment university with a $200 million budget. They only offer 10 master degree programs and 1 doctoral program in physical therapy. They have little to no research activity. the worst of the MWC schools we brought on is still literally 10x the school EWU is in terms of endowment and all have significantly larger enrollments and degree offerings. and as I argued against Sac St. we are looking for teams that excite. We do not need to reach down, we need to reach across and up. WHY? why on earth would we reach down for teams? there is no reason. We need teams that elevate the conference. Our goal here is to make the Pac-12 a Power Conference. that is the mission. that is what we are trying to do. Eastern Washington. Sacramento State, no FCS school on this planet moves that needle. It won't contribute to the sum of making us so strong of a G5 conference we are, in effect a Power conference and our new media deal hits at $20M plus. Eastern Washington brings zero value to TV deal. it probably hurts it. they are dead weight on a TV deal.

I only asked because I don't know how these things work , conferences and joining other conferences etc . You all seem to know far more than I could ever hope to learn about college football other than what goes on, on the football field . My question was legitimate and i was curious . I appreciate the legitimate responses and to those having fun with me , Go Beavs !

They have baseball again, dropped it around 1990 and then brought it back. I think their last year of football was in the late 80's. Their prior baseball coach was Matt Miles, Danny Miles' son (their legendary basketball coach). Unfortunately, Matt died of brain cancer in 2023. I grew up playing baseball and basketball against Matt.

I think their last year of football was in the late 80's. Crap - I should know that. When I was trying to motivate my son to do better in school we took a quick tour around campus (2013?) and he visited with the baseball coach. My son was skeptical that he'd get bigger than 5'9, 130. A few years later when he was 6' and 190, he told me I was right.

In 1988, they had a good team that lost in the semis to Wisconsin LaCrosse on the road. There were 2 NFL players on that team: LB Joe Cain who had a good career with the Seahawks and later the Vikings(?), and WR Nate Lewis who hung around with the Chargers for a few seasons.
