From Athlon Sports Matt Wadleigh
What a turn of events it has been in the Pac-12 Conference. In less than a day, they went from having a bleak future with just two programs to suddenly having six schools with more schools potentially on the way.
The additions of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State became official Thursday morning after some late-night reports first broke the news.
n fact, Pac-12 Conference Commissioner Teresa Gould expressed they have been drawing interest from a number of schools, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
'In an interview with @yahoosports, Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould says there has been “significant” interest from other schools over the last 18 hours in joining the league," Dellenger wrote on X. "No set number in mind except for the eight needed for CFP/NCAA requirements'
In less than 18 hours, Gould had mentioned there was "significant" interest from schools trying to join the suddenly revived Pac-12.
Brett McMurphy of Action Network reported late Wednesday night that the Pac-12 needs eight minimum to meet the requirements. What's also of note is Gould saying there is "no set number."
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports mentioned Memphis and UTSA as possibilities from the AAC, and there are plenty of other realistic options to join the Pac-12.
Teresa Gould and the Pac-12 Conference has undergone a whirlwind of a year. They went from 10 programs leading for the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten and had plenty of questions about what would happen next.
Now, they are back with six programs and reportedly a ton of interest circulating.

Without names of the "interested" schools, this story is pretty much worthless word-salad.
I know the schools don't want their names out there, so as not to disrupt life in the current conferences. But if we had names, it would give the fans of the six teams - the people who will be asked to support the new Pac-12 - a chance to voicve their opinions on who they want, and who they specifically don't want, a perfect straw poll.
I think not including UNLV is a mistake, but I guess they didn't want to completely kill the MWC, which can recover partially by simply adding UTEP and NMSU.
So, now we wait some more, and the speculation continues unabated.

If not, the whole thing is a matter of the Nevada legislature. They couldn't agree alone, to my understanding. It would be a future Nevadamony situation. It isn't out of the realm of possible the pair join up at the end of all this. I just gotta believe the Pac doesn't want to hand Nevada a slot this early.

And Nevada isn't the best of the remaining MWC teams after UNLV, either.

This is a great time for any FCS program west of 97 degrees to move up to FBS. The MWC is not going to be too choosy, and Sac State would work nicely for them.
The Pac, on the other hand, can be a lot more selective.

And Nevada isn't the best of the remaining MWC teams after UNLV, either. But if you get both NV schools and lock up the state, isn't that a good thing? Reno has a lot going for it.

And Nevada isn't the best of the remaining MWC teams after UNLV, either. UNLV is the only school left in the MWC that would add value. AFA isn't interested and will be a better fit in the AAC with the other service academies. I really don't think UNLV isn't going to be left behind nor will the Nevada politicians for UNLV to suffer because UNR. UNLV left UNR before, when they left the Big West to join the WAC in 1996.

UNLV sucked when we lived down there. Reno historically owns the Fremont Cannon. Lots of distraction in Vegas. In Reno, Wolfpack has no competition for eyeballs......I guess the only thing UNLV has going for it is more people in Vegas.

It’s been down for sure, but downtown along the river is really nice. Lots of good restaurants and park-like trail on both sides. It’s coming back, albeit slowly.
