Look for the MWC to expand without Oregon State or Washington State. Sounds like the commissioner there is just done with the pac. I could see the MWC doing something crazy.

Why does this article (and plenty of other articles) focus on the population sizes of Corvallis and Pullman? Like that somehow determines the size of the fan base? These are college towns.

Go see a game at Clemson some time. It is a village, whose size triples on game day. And it is not exactly close to any major urban areas. Some large cities would almost have Corvallis as a suburb of Portland

Can't tell you how many times I have been wearing Beaver gear and a fan of the other team' asks if I am from Corvallis..' The 'Corvallis population' issue isn't the population of Corvallis, it's the distance from a large population base and the ease of filling stands with the local population base

Much like Vegas san diego is a big city where the local college team is practically ignored. Take beaver fans out of snapdragon a few days ago and that stadium would have been quiet, real quiet.

The meme coming out of the MWC from now on is going to be, "We're done with them. Don't want them anyway now. We'll go our own way and find our own way to expand."
The question I have is whether teams like Boise State and Fresno State are going to be happy that their conference is expanding by taking teams even worse that their existing bottom feeder teams. Who else is left for the MWC to expand with? I get that she's going to try to funel some extra money to the top teams to make them swallow this. But I don't think there's going to be enough extra money around for that to matter much. How does that help MWC get a better TV deal?

They know that there are good odds OSU/WSU just end up in a P4 conference (the rumors heated back up about the big 12 today...) They also know OSU/WSU are just going to steal at least 6 top MWC teams to rebuild the Pac anyways. No matter what, MWC needs to expand and to be looking at expanding. They cannot count on SDSU, Boise, Fresno, CSU, UNLV, and.... probably SJSU being there if that is the route we end up taking. Under no circumstances are we ever joining the mountain west, that is simply never going to happen. Parts of the Mountain West may join us though.

It always amuses me when TV covers a sold out or practically sold out Reser and the talking heads say “Everyone in Corvallis has turned out today”.
I’d wager that in any average Reser sell out the percentage of fans from Benton/Linn County is substantially outnumbered by the fans coming from outside of Benton/Linn Counties. It only stands to reason, considering where Oregon’s population is centered and where OSU’s in-state alumni live.

But I don't think there's going to be enough extra money around for that to matter much. How does that help MWC get a better TV deal? I don't read that at all. In fact, the SDSU AD seems pretty eager to work with us and the Cougars, which is good, since SDSU is the prize jewel of the conference. And the ADs will tell the commissioner how to act; if enough of them feel joining with us and the Cougs is the right thing, they will. “Oregon State and Washington State are going to find a home, whether it’s West Coast based or nationally based, I don’t know what it is,” {SDSU AD} Wicker said. “I’d love to have them in the Mountain West because they’re quality programs, they’re great brands, and they would walk in the door and have a bigger national brand than any of the people in our league probably.
“I certainly hope it works out, at some point, in some way, that benefits us all.”It's all posturing at this point. We have to leave our options open, and Nevarez has to talk tough to keep her base happy. PS: There really are no logical new/rebuilt Pac-12 members outside of the MWC footprint. UTSA? Tulsa? Rice? My god, CUSA is way worse than the MWC, and they are all #3 or worse in their own markets. Memphis and Tulane from the AAC? Memphis is an NCAA-compliance nightmare, and Tulane is simply too far away

Corvallis and Albany being all of 10 miles apart combine for over 110K alone. We ain't the f%#*in' Ozarks or anything. A quick list of cities Corvallis, alone, is larger than without really deep diving: Pullman, WA Happy Valley, PA West Lafayette, ID Charlottesville, Virginia Clemson, SC Manhattan, Kansas Ames, Iowa (close here I saw another pop with Ames having 4K more people, so maybe a push...)

West Lafayette, INKind of like looking at Springfield, OR without including Eugene, OR. Lafayette, IN is across the river and bigger. Both towns are roughly the same distance from Indy that Corvallis is from PDX.

If you are located in or really close to a major metropolitan area, you are more likely to pick up more casual/bandwagon fans. And you have many more TV sets that can tune into the games.
Seattle and UW as an example. You get fans that didn't matriculate at UW attending games from Everett, Kent, Tacoma, Puyallup, the Peninsula, etc., etc.
