Not sure how they got the score 21-34?? Looking at finishes I saw 21-48?? After the scoring runners from Oregon (1,2,5,6,7) were scored, Oregon's other runners did not count toward scoring. So for scoring purposes, the Beavers finished 3,4, 8, 9, 10 (34). Confusing, but that's how it's done.

Typically whether scoring or not finishing position is what is scored? Or is duals different?

That's how all meets are scored. If you don't contribute to your team score, you are not counted and for scoring purposes it's as if you didn't compete. In the case of ties, the placing of your team's No. 6 finisher is used as the tiebreaker.

A team’s runners after their top 5 aren’t counted in the placement for scoring. So in a dual meet even if one team went 1-5, the final score would be 15 (1+2+3+4+5) to 40 (6+7+8+9+10). No matter how well the first team’s other runners placed.

No matter how well the first team’s other runners placed. My info is very old. But it used to be the top 5 runners scored and the 6th and 7th on your team moved the opponent down. For instance, uo is 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10. OSU is 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14. Final score uo 21, Beavs 39. And you had to specify your top 7 before the meet. A team could have 10 or more in uniform, but before the start, you had to say which 7 were counters. And then ties were broken by whose #6 beat the other #6.
