Yeah, yeah, I know. Stats are for losers. In this case that's true. We lost the Utah game and I'm discussing stats. But sometimes stats tell a story for a team that is trying to improve.
Yeah, yeah, I know. The predicted Storm of the Century did not materialize in Corvallis last Saturday and the weather was not nearly the factor many thought it would be. But there is zero doubt that the wind did wreak havoc with the passing game of both teams in the first half. The second half was more of just a normal football game.
Yeah, yeah, I know. If only the Beaver coaches had called the same offensive plays in the first half as they had in the second half and those plays had worked the same and if Utah wasn't able to adjust, then we could have easily won this game. But I'd rather focus on what went *right* at this point rather than what went *wrong*.
The stat I'm talking about is that the Beavers out gained Utah 242-88 in the second half. We're not talking about a BSU-like game where the Beavers were so far behind at the half that they almost HAD to do better in the second half. This Utah game was close throughout and neither team could ever let up or go to their reserves (except when necessitated by injuries). Utah's offense is hampered by a not-great QB and injuries galore. But they are 6-1 despite how bad some fans think they may be. Our defense was largely not helped by our offense or special teams. But with the game on the line during the entire second half, our team outgained Utah 242-88.
It was still a loss and it doesn't give us any bonus points on the board at the beginning of the Husky game, but I still think it's worth mentioning (again).

Dare I say it, but our defense may be coming into their own and figuring out what it takes to win games. They were rewarded for that effort against Cal, but not against Utah...but I'll be damned if they didn't fight like hell and absolutely refuse to have that game end with Utah taking a knee. They gave the offense a chance at the very end, even though the odds were high that it would be squandered. I hope they can keep their heads up and continue with that never-say-die attitude until the offense can figure things out (ie, until Nall can get back to 100% ;p).
GO BEAVS!

Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination.

I hope you're right. The D does seem to be playing tougher, but I'd like to see us be competitive in a game that doesn't involve a team with horrible D and an injured QB (Cal) or a team with an offensive line and RB corps held together by baling twine and rubber cement (Utah).
I'll start drinking the beaver juice if they can put up a fight vs. UW for sure. If they don't, well, that's not really indicative of a poor performance, so I'll reserve judgement until after the WSU game.
