The series also noted that if they let him in after he dies it is a major injustice. I can't disagree with that. Let him in before he is pushing up roses...Put an Asterisk on his plaque if they want. The all time hits leader (which will likely never be broken) deserves to be in Cooperstown Tell that to Rube Foster. Or, in our lifetime, Buck O'Neil. If they let him into the Hall, it's a major injustice against the game - period.

The part that got me in the HBO series was just before Rose was eligible for the HoF they changed the rules to exclude anybody on the 'banned list' Betting is obviously a big deal but so is cheating (hell Astros), 'roids (hello a lot of guys). Rose is arrogant as hell still but that is what made him Charlie Hustle The series also noted that if they let him in after he dies it is a major injustice. I can't disagree with that. Let him in before he is pushing up roses...Put an Asterisk on his plaque if they want. The all time hits leader (which will likely never be broken) deserves to be in CooperstownAs for the hits leader, Rose needed 527 more games to "break" Ty Cobb's hits record and only wound up with 65 more hits. The "all-time hits leader!" Ha! The "all-time hits leader" probably deserves to be in Cooperstown. The lying, grifting SOB that cheated on his taxes, while gambling and grifting, Rose became in his later life absolutely does not. He knew gambling was a death sentence. He did it anyway. He lied about doing it at the outset and changed his story later. He started selling autographs and merchandise to pay for his gambling and did not report the autograph and merchandise income and gambling winnings to the IRS. He gambled on baseball and then tried to cheat us all by not paying his fair share of taxes. Rose does not deserve to be in the Hall in this life or in the hereafter. Bonds and Big Mac do not deserve to be in the Hall either. The game of baseball is bigger than all three, and all three damaged baseball's foundations. What is sad is that Bonds and Rose probably would have been in the Hall, if they had just continued down the paths that they started on. But they completely blew their opportunity in their later life.

You really don't want to give the public a reason to disregard your sport. The commissioner must represent the past, present, and the future of the sport, protecting it from the players and their egos.

Pete has the most hits, therefore, he’s the all time hits leader. Ha, ha. There’s plenty of SOB’s in the hall. But, I do agree with you that Bonds, McGuire, Clemens and Sosa are out. They cheated on the field.

Tres Tinkle's senior year, I heard Mike Parker interviewing Don McLean. McLean said he is UCLA'S all time scoring leader but nobody mistakes him for UCLA'S best all time player. The reference was to Tinkle. But it could apply to Pete Rose also.

(Rose's rookie season was the second in the 162-game format.) They gave Maris an asterisk. If Maris deserved an asterisk, Rose deserves one, too.

I'm not gonna try and argue whether Bonds should or shouldn't (truth be told my stance has softened over time) but man does Bonds have some insane stats. I don't think there's anyone in any sport that has more singular stat lines that just make me go wow Some of my favourite's . . . - Craig Biggio only had 1 more career RBI than Bonds had on just home runs - From 2001 - 2004, Bonds had equal to or more fWAR than the Mets, Brewers, Royals, Tigers, and Expos had as teams - 49.1% of Bonds career hits were extra base hits - in just his 7 years w/ the Pirates, Bonds accumulated more rWar than 7 different HoF members - Bonds has a higher bWAR than Ozzie Smith + Pete Rose (and Griffey Jr. + Johnny Bench) was he a roided out mountain of muscle? Almost definitely but my stars was he good at baseball

The fact is we’ll never know, And an unrepentant liar and cheat should never be trusted or believed. Had Rose confessed, apologized, and worked for the future of baseball instead of being the slimeball he is, then this could be a different conversation.

Rose, Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, A-Rod, McGwire, Piazza...Shoeless Joe, 2017 Houston trashcan, Brady Anderson 1996 bat?

I said I've softened my stance over time on the Bonds era players because while the MLB put them on the banned substance list in 1991; they didn't start testing until 2003 with the policy getting progressively more strict in the upcoming years. To me it "feels" worse to have been caught trying to cheat on a steroid test than being told "don't do this but we aren't gonna check if you do or don't" but that's just one Pirates fan's opinion and I certainly won't say a differing opinion is wrong
