This article was just before the 2023 season. I suspect it is better now, but it is a hole to dig out of It's actually carried forward. Several big donors have dropped their levels, one dropped completely.

Boosters will pale in comparison to corporate money, when that day comes.

Boosters will pale in comparison to corporate money, when that day comes. Yep... and we just moved into the normalization and "legal" means for donors and corporate $ to influence recruiting, and therefore eventually coaching decisions. If it already hasn't happened, the "We have big $ invested, play this kid(s) or the money will stop..." will soon be a normal occurrence. What was once a behind the scene, multiple rule violation is now completely on the up and up. And, worse... there are no regulations that are enforced. If you loved college sport as it once (mostly) was, then hope for a new NCAA or ?? division where NIL collectives and corporate sponsors have little or no monetary pull. If it means lower tier, yet still talented recruits who do not attract NIL $ from those type of big $ schools, so be it. I'd increase my type and number of season tix and donations if OSU was a member of a "more" FCS organization than trying to play where they can never truly belong.

It sounds like a good idea but we'd still develop players / find diamonds in the rough that would be poached by the "big money" league. I don't see any way around that except if a kid accepts a scholarship he provides some type of commitment or maybe agrees to a buyout using some of the NIL he will earn from the poaching team? Just a thought.

Bray understands what he's got in front of him. Develop, get a season out of em, poached, wash rinse, repeat. As for milk maid at msu, he's a smart guy. He will likely adapt to whatever is in front of him. I still think he flames out at msu though. Unless they are ok with 3rd place every season.

I don't see any way around that except if a kid accepts a scholarship he provides some type of commitment or maybe agrees to a buyout using some of the NIL he will earn from the poaching team? Just a thought. True, but some may forget that's always been possible. Much easier, and likely under today's rules. OSU has always had their best players be targets to be stolen. Before it was just under the table boosters connected with programs, or unscrupulous agents. However, there are only so many roster spots. For every player OSU might lose there are unhappy players at this "elite" schools. And, while some can hop within that group, most can't with the addition of HS and other transfers. Plus, for every portal transfer there is a HS player available. OSU's role will basically be the same... find the best potential recruits that fit their style and system and develop them. The rest is it of their control and be the focus of recruiting. Eventually it's the FCS schools that will see the drop off in recruiting talent. The biggest worry I have isn't media $ or conferences as again it's out of a school's control. BUT, if the upper tier schools somehow are able to increase active scholly roster sizes to even 95 it would be a huge blow. Another "scheme" would be to allow 85 full schollies, plus 30 or so partials + some NIL easy shots. The elite teams are basically creating the groundwork for them making policy. Starting with the CFP, format and $. Then with the media creating the realignment issue. The next logical step is to usurp the NCAA in making policy adjustments. Big media $ cuts could "talk" here as the NCAA has 90+ sports that don't make $ and championships to run. Add a huge settlement to pay plus maybe others pending. The worst had yet to happen and why a group of schools need to be proactive in banding together and creating their own path. It is insane to think the "lesser" D1 schools will ever be treated fairly or with any type of mutual respect (other than NC fodder). There is an astute poster here that likes to remind us history repeats itself unless we use it to learn and adapt. Recent events and past history shows you should never trust to be treated honestly in an adversarial relationship. It'll be a long difficult process, but dozens of schools like OSU world be better off being proactive creating another option vs waiting for unknown outcome and the scraps it provides.

But, tOSU, UM, PennSt, SC, Oregon, UW, Iowa... plus a seasonal upstart every so often... are not all going to be down at the same time. MSU is probably a middling 5th-9th place conference team depending on the B10 draw. Bowl team because they'll schedule weak sisters for NC. He's most likely a dead coach walking after year 2, with booster issues after year 1. He's going to collect a nice payday then eventual try to land a HC job in the MWC or WAC. Where at that time OSU schedules him H & A and kicks his ever loving arse. Ok... Kreskin out!

Yea I was thinking 3rd as the high water mark....maybe an occasional run for the conference, if he was given the time. The expectations will likely outweigh the results, and he will be sent packing. I couldn't care less where he ends up from there, as long as it's not Corvallis. We do have a history of re-hiring.......I'd hope he's on the no re-hire list.

The rumor is all football rosters will be hard-capped at 85. If that happens, there's going to be a flood of trickle-down talent to the lesser P4, G5 and FCS schools.

But if the transfer portal is going to be used so heavily that you virtually never see a journeyman 2 year upperclassmen, you're running closer to the NFL model where you have starters and backups, and guys that sit on the bench the whole year are encouraged to move on. I can see that being a possibility. They should permit 105 player rosters for the non-semi pro schools and stick with the 85 schollie limit.

The Spartans have played eight FCS teams in their history. Since the FCS era started in 2006, Oregon state has played 15 FCS teams. In the 1978-2005 1-AA era, Michigan State played zero 1-AA teams. Oregon State played 16 1-AA teams. So eight to 31 teams, and we are badmouthing Michigan State's schedules? Michigan State also usually plays at least one P5 team every year. They just finished up a home-and-home with Washington last year. Before that was Miami, Arizona State, Notre Dame, and Oregon. And before that was the 17-year rivalry with Notre Dame, which was only ended, because the Irish started to play five ACC teams each year. There are reasons to dislike Michigan State that have become apparent over the past eight months, but Michigan State has historically been a very commendable program, generally speaking.

It's a big deal for EMU, CMU or WMU, easy bus ride, and it keeps the guarantee money in-state. And it's a huge deal for the Michigan kids at the MAC schools. MAC schools only play eight conference games, for some strange reason. EMU and Michigan are about 15 miles apart. They just agreed to play in 2027 and 2030.
