I was looking at MSUs class so far and they have 10 commits all 3 stars, 61st nationally. I know there is a ways to go but if he wants to get into the top half of the B1G that won't cut it. Maybe he can make up for it in the portal, but imo HS recruiting is still the foundation of a successful program. My major critique of him at OSU was could he recruit at a high enough level to have sustained success. Player development will only get you so far. He has never come across as particularly charismatic and there was the report a few years back of him not useing social media in recruiting, when every other program and coach were using it (after that criticism he did start using it). MSU gave Mel Tucker a 95-million-dollar contract, so they surely have money to compete in NIL. It will be interesting to see if their fan base starts getting restless about his recruiting, or lack of it.

And, MSU is struggling with NIL $. They've had huge boosters pull out of funding and main collective basically went belly up. They canceled or paused two dozen+ NIL deals on the football squad. As of late March there were only 5 players with any deals at all. Besides all the social and administrative issues, NIL $ to compete in the B10 isn't there. JS walked into a mess. www.si.com/college/michiganstate/football/michigan-state-spartans-official-nil-brand-sd4l-cancelling-deals-with-dozens-of-football-players-msu-093023

Funny, he did a great job recruiting our players (and coaches).

I want to know why JS gets credit for a great QB coach. I think Mike Riley was an awesome QB coach. The problem in this day an age is his system took a QB a couple of years to figure it out which takes time. What has JS done? Sure he had one 5 star dude to work with at washington. Other than that what QB has taken leap and bounds advancement because of his great coaching?

I suspect it is better now, but it is a hole to dig out of

I expect Smith to do very well at MSU if he stays long enough. He is a very good coach and has a really good staff with him. Having said that, I am very happy that the Beavers have Bray and his staff and I think that's about as good a situation as you can ask for. I doubt that OSU would have done better if it had more time to find a coach and staff.

Don’t milkmaid threads belong on The Rotating Tap? Beats me - that damn board moderator normally doesn't miss anything - he must be on vacation!
