Amazing ! A high school pitching prospect that less than a year ago was barely inside the Top-500 ranking lists, is now being projected to be the 39th pick overall (Competitive Balance Round "A" sandwiched between 1st and 2nd round) in this year's draft. That is a Kansas City Royal pick with a slot of $2,395,000.
He recently said, "I'm going to have to make a big decison here shortly"
RHP Dax Whitney from Blackfoot, Idaho and part of with OSU's '24 class.

If anything, this speaks to the coaching staff’s ability to identify talent. Seems like Whitney not be making it to Corvallis in the fall.

Baseball Execs and Scouts will tell you, the biggest risk in any draft are high school pitchers . . . especialy those drafted in the first two rounds. College pitchers offer more certainty. Dax has continually improved and his velo has ticked up considerably with good movement. He checks a lot of boxes but I'm not sure he will go that early in the draft for the above reason - I'm thinking probably 4th or 5th round, although I could be missing something here.

Are pitchers more likely to jump to pro's when drafted moderately high as compared to position players. Pitchers have usually a short career, so I'm wondering if they are more likely to make the jump to get paid. NIL might stop some of that, but then would MLB teams look more at committed players that don't have a big NIL backing?

I can tell you from my experiences with players... a topic that not many bring up... a academics. Some just are through with school after HS. They got through due to a sport(s) and even though playing college ball is enticing, going to class is not. Not every high level prospect is a college bound kid. So, playing ball, getting some decent dollars, living out a dream sooner rather than later is a focus for many. Those that aren't, but need more development can opt for JC/CC ball and be eligible sooner. There are lots of various backgrounds. Certain routes are just not an option for some.

This week Baseball America released their 2024 High School All American team. Named to the first team which has 8 position players and 5 pitchers, you guessed it . . . Dax Whitney. Dax reaches 96 mph, has 2 wicked breaking balls and a premier change up. He doesn't walk many either. He's on everyone's "Hot Sheet".
We haven't reached Vanderbilt or UCLA's level of losing top pitching prospects in the draft, but we have lost several that made it sting a little bit. Tyler Gough, Geo Rivera, Paul Wilson, and Dane Lais were lost on draft day and next month, Whitney, Swanson and Haight are front and center. Earlier we lost Jake McKowen who decommitted to sign somewhere in this year's draft.

Well, it isn't ideal, but at least every major program faces the same issue equally. Rare these days in the world of college sports, given the have's and the have not's

Our guy Dax is the Apple of every Scouts' eye - just rocketing up the draft boards. Baseball America says he's one of the fastest risers in this draft.
"Dax Whitney, RHP, Blackfoot (Idaho) HS It’s also rare to see a highly-touted Idaho prospect in the draft, and Whitney has a chance to be the highest-drafted prep from the state this century. He’s got a body and profile scouts dream about thanks to a 6-foot-5, 195-pound frame. His four-pitch mix of average or better offerings is led by a fastball that has been up to 96 and two breaking balls that he can spin with conviction."
Dax is the Dude!
