There will be some guys who will enter portal over projected playing time. I'm betting the nucleus of the returnees stay together here. A few not on your list who still have eligibility might consider returning if they fall outside the top ten rounds. A starting rotation of Segura, Keljo and a young Kmatz would be something to look forward to. Last time I looked, May is projected to go in the third round. Coming here improved his draft stock. Good story for Canham and Dorman to tell prospective talent in the portal. Lots to be optimistic about and yes I hope this post ages well. Has anyone seen the Kleinschmidt kid from LBCC pitch? Obviously it's a lot to ask of a kid from a JC to step into prominent role, but he has ridiculous numbers. 78 IP 120K, 1.03 ERA and a lefty... and an Oregon kid. I don't see anyone talking about GAINING players from the portal. Let's give ourselves a little credit here. Hainline and May were 2 great examples to use to entice potential transfers to come to Corvallis.

I think he will come in and play a meaningful role right away, just not sure if that will be starting or relief. I agree about the portal. I’m sure we will get some good talent to fill some holes.

Except for in the super regionals, I didn’t notice any problems with catching. If we let the super regional determine our needs, we’ll, we need a lot of hitters first. Weber struggled behind the plate all year. There's a reason Smith caught games May pitched. He was 2/20 throwing runners out coming into the series, and struggled mightily with throws down to 2nd and backpick attempts all season long. Weber only has 2 errors coming into this weekend but it was on less attempts and doesn't tell the whole story. Might need Wilky's assistance to discuss passed balls/wild pitches while he was catching vs. Smith, but overall Smith is a better receiver as well. Weber did throw a runner out against Kentucky, but it was on a double steal and was throwing out the slower trail runner trying to take 2nd, and doesn't make up for the throwing errors/other defensive fiascos behind the plate both games. He took over as the primary catcher in March as he got on a tear hitting the ball but then cooled off significantly in the last month to month and a half of the season. IMO having him in the lineup didn't add enough offensively in May/June to justify having him behind the plate as much as he was.
Having one or both back would be welcome next season, but unless one or both make a significant step forward then an upgrade would be very welcome at the position.
Really fair points, and I agree that Weber needs to continue to develop with all aspects of his game. He did take a nice step forward this year compared to last, so I am hoping he does that again for us leading into next year.

Up the middle is the key aspects of any defense. Catching is by far the weak link. OSU needs an experienced portal catcher to go with the WLinn kid. Who by the way is a better receiver than either Smith or Webber.
I've been around the Kleinschmit kid since he was in high school. He was very good vs inferior 2A competition... not so much vs AAA Legion studs. CC ball in Oregon and WA is not very good overall. He'll be taking a big step up and needs to learn to locate in the strike zone. Throwing 90-92 in the middle third was fine in CC ball, not vs D1 hitters. His biggest positive is a easy motion that tends to hide the ball.
No idea what the portal will bring, but it better be at least three potential starting, middle relief type arms. Depth of talent is needed.

That’s a critical spot in the bullpen that will have to be replaced.

With all the question marks entering play, I thought this roster actually overachieved. A ton of guys became starters and excelled. Portal guys became instrumental and bypassed their former season. Next season's question marks are even broader at this point until more of the roster is known in mid July. Then what the schedule begins to look like... most likely we'll into August, early September before all contracts are finalized.

The catcher position needed a major upgrade. One guy can catch and throw but not hit, the other swings it a bit but can’t frame or throw. I guess Adley’s don’t grow on trees Except for in the super regionals, I didn’t notice any problems with catching. If we let the super regional determine our needs, we’ll, we need a lot of hitters first. not just based on the postseason. We had every kind of catching problem there was. Between the two of them, bad at framing, too many passed balls, can’t throw base runners out, errors. Add little offensive production and I would like to see a major upgrade

But - he's not."Kleinschmit had an offer to accompany Peterson to Alberta this summer and play for him with the Okotoks Dawgs, one of the premier franchises in the Western Canadian Baseball League, that country’s equivalent of the West Coast league.
“That’s a long ways away and I’ve never been away from my family that far,” he said. “I wanted to stay close to home and the Knights are just down the road.
“It’s a chance to play some high-level baseball. I’m excited for it.”
Peterson is confident Kleinschmit’s talents will play just fine in the WCL." corvallisknights.com/kleinschmit-having-great-spring/

I would have thought that with MC having been a catcher the two catchers would have been better defensively. I thought a major problem for our pitchers was the bad framing that would have given our pitchers more called strikes. If you are taking practice swings after every pitch and you lunge and land on the heel, and that is your normal swing then you are going to have problems hitting.

or a lack of respect Kleinschmit LMAO... yeah cuz on message boards, including this one, "short cuts" aren't used. I wonder how many other last names have been used in just a few days?? But, Kleinschmit (BTW auto correct on my system... "Kleinschmidt") triggered "cool" & "vinson"? Weird...

Interesting. My autocorrect must be an updated version. It doesn't prevent me from proofreading my posts.
