Oregon State signed 14 preps and 6 transfers in their 2023 recruiting class. Looking back, how did the recruits fare and what were their first year experiences with the Beavers? How about this group's future? Please add your thoughts, insights and comments to the subject.
THE 14 PREPS:
Trent Caraway: Has started and played in 16 games to date. Missed better part of season with injury. In 69 PA's forged a .350/ .435/.533 slash line. Showed signs of power with 5 doubles and 2 HR's.Had 5 BB + 4 HBP with 21 K's. Was 4 for 4 in SBA . Defensively, showed good range and a plus arm at 3B. Solid contributer and bright future.
Levi Jones: Appeared in 7 games. In 9 PA's had a single, double and K'd twice. Slash was .222/ .222/ .333. Showed good speed from the left side. Compact stroke with some power. Exciting future for Levi.
Dawson Santana: Appeared in 11 games, primarily as a PR and late inning defender at 2B. Recorded 1 hit in 3 AB's with 2 BB. Scored 4 runs on 1 hit. 1 ROE, and 2 BB. Good speed and quickness. Played behind Bazz at 2B.
Eric Segura: 15 starts for the RHP and 6-1 W-L record to date. Has pitched 69.1 innings. Has a 4.93 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Has held opponents to .242 BA. Struck out 72 and walkedr 23. Polished freshman with poise and competitive fire. College weightroom will help him develop his arsenal even further, Lots of upside for this rotation chucker.
Drew Talavs: Has appeared in 11 games with 11.2 IP. ERA of 4.63 and WHIP is 1.80. Has issued 3 BB while striking out 11. Lively low-90's fastball. Strong future with the Beavs.
Matt Morrell: Has pitched in 15 games. ERA is 7.50 and WHIP is 2.25. Allowed 17 hits with 10BB and 7 K.
Good velo. Impreissive size and excellent athlete. Needs to avoid middle-middle pitch location. Improvement comes with improved command and refinement. Off season work should bring huge rewards. Potential +.
Lief Palmer: Lief was injured in the Fall and missed a good part nof the seeason. His return was rocky. He has appeared in 5 games with one start. In 4 IP, he has allowed 9 runs on 11 hits with 4BB and 3 K's. Palmer reaches the mid-90's with his heater and has decent secondary stuff. He struggled with command and never got comfortable on the mound. Maybe needs this year to mature and get his rhythm back .
THE RED SHIRTS:
The Beavers red-shirted both freshman catchers with Smith and Weber returning in '24.
C Anthony Marnell III
C/RHP Evan Gustafson
RHP James DeCremer
RHP Bryce Johnson.
OF Carson McEnroe (uncertain about his status)
IF Reeve Boyd (Now in the transfer portal)
FARM CLUB:
RHP Easton Corey - Part of the '23 class. The Pendleton ace had Tommy John surgery prior to the fall and is attending Linn-Benton C.C.and maybe awaiting his call up to the "Big Club" for '25.
TRANSFERS:
Elijah Hainline. No need to mention his feats. A big contributor to the '24 Beaver season.
Bridger Homes. From Feather River to a PAC-12 closer. Everyone wins, OSU has benefitted greatly from having this weapon in the Bulllpen and his exposure and performance at OSU will get him drafted this summer.
Kellen Oakes.Effective in 22.1 IP in relief. Strike thrower and poised.
Tephen Montgomery. Has pitched 4.2 innings this season.
Chase Reynolds. Has pitched 4.1 innings this year.
Noah Ferguson. Has pitched 14.1 innings. (Now in the Transfer Portal)
