14-9 now. If you win Game One and save your ace, you are a genius. I wouldn't necessarily say that. They are blowing through their bullpen trying to hang on. Plus, no chance to bring back your ace for an inning or two on Monday. Hjerpe was not the ace in 2021. But he threw 93 pitches against McNeese and came back on one day's rest to throw 20 pitches on Monday. Matt Boyd threw 123 pitches against Kansas State on Saturday in 2013 and came back on one day's rest to throw the final 21 pitches (1.1 innings) on Monday. Dallas Buck threw 89 pitches against North Carolina on Saturday in 2006 and came back on one day's rest to throw 29 pitches (1.1 innings) on Monday. Maybe not two innings, but you could probably squeeze four outs out of your ace on Monday, even if you throw your the ace on Saturday.

Plus, no chance to bring back your ace for an inning or two on Monday. Their #2 pitcher Tygart is out with a shoulder injury this weekend. So they "rolled the dice" and kept Smith back for the Louisiana Tech/Kansas St winner.(assuming they beat SEMO) I'm with you.......... don't f%#* around and pitch your #1.

That is why I don't like "saving" your ace. It's now 10-9 arky 14-9 Arky now. Dave Van Horn looks like a genius. Casey saved the ace in 2007, 2011, 2017, and 2018. It seemed to work out well those four years. In the past 35 years, it has never once come back to bite Oregon State. That said, Casey saved the ace situationally. I just have not heard why it situationally makes sense to pitch May in Game One. Didn't really matter that year. The ace was not "available" for the super. Also, our "ace" in 2007 lost game 2 and we had to scramble to make it to the Super.

The whole child molestation thing came out between the Regional and Super. Casey threw Thompson against Holy Cross and saved Heimlich to throw to the Yale v. Nebraska winner. Oregon State's only hope to beat Jacob Thompson (#160 overall selection in 2008) was to throw Stutes. Fortunately, Tropical Storm Barry rolled through and rained out Sunday, which pushed the games back a day, which gave Paterson enough time to recover and throw the final 3.2 innings in the first Virginia game on two days' rest and Stutes enough time to recover and throw 4.1 innings in the second Virginia game on two days' rest (and Paterson came back and threw another three innings for his first save of the season for good measure).

Go Nichols State. Even that supposed, weak 3-seed can put a hurt on you this time of year.

Loving the number of runs scored in this Nicholls/Irvine game. Keep using up more pitching.

Nicholls down 11-9 in the 8th against the 'vaunted' Irvine team.
BTW Tulane beat Nicholls twice this year, they were midweek games but they beat them.(3-2 & 14-12)
Also, Irvine has used their #1 Pinto and top two bullpen guys trying to "gut out" a win.

Tibbett is their closer and Ojeda is their best uninjured setup guy. I am not sure if/when Nick Rincover is supposed to come back.

That was crushed over the scoreboard. 12-11 Nicholls on a 3 run homer in the 9th.

100%, although I will say I think Nicholls is one of the weakest 3 seeds in the field. Still, 9 runs in 3+ innings against their ace+pen is nothing to sneeze at. On paper, probably one of the five worst 3 seeds in the field. But you can probably wad that up at this point.

Their offense is legit though and they've shown it today. I do still like matching up against them more than UCI though so hopefully they hold on in the 9th.
