Ultimately we did what I had asked of us. We competed for 4 quarters. we held tough at home against a decent team. That is a sign of progress. So clearly I am feeling better than I was post-colorado, despite the loss.
But i will also admit, I am getting more and more frustrated at our complete and utter in ability to complete a forward pass. It is getting ridiculous. windy day notwithstanding... Our OL has now had back to back pretty dang decent games. as a TEAM we averaged 5.6 YPC. our two RBs were 6.7 and 7.0... Bolden was 8.7 YPC
our OL is getting better and our perimeter WR blocking is vastly improved.
But good freaking lord almighty, can somebody... ANYBODY complete a pass?
9/30 for 100 yards 1 TD and 1 INT. that is ugly. Our best passer played 2 series...

We should be looking high and low to bring in one of the best JUCO QBs in this country. They are almost guaranteed to start. It's a great opportunity for a kid that wants to fast track to starting in a Big 5 conference.

We need to be looking high and low for a QB coach that can teach a kid how to complete a pass. We have this Moran Kid right? can somebody actually take him aside and... you know... teach him something? That'd be cool.

It would also help if we taught our current receivers to catch. Sure, it was wet, but Garretson was throwing some great, dead-on passes that went RIGHT through the hands of Villamin, Jarmon, etc.

I got a kick out of the postgame show when Wilson and Callan were downplaying the importance of being able to throw the ball as a quarterback. They all agreed that McMariyon threw the best ball in practice (something I don't think I'd ever heard anyone say before Saturday), but that that was only one of "a multitude" of things a quarterback has to do.

There are a lot more "non-passing" responsibilities to this offense than we've ever been used to for sure. I'm just saying, you can't really apply the YOU HAD ONE JOB meme to a qb in this offense lol

The receivers definitely were not doing anything to help DG out, that's for sure. They didn't make the tough catches at all and they dropped the majority of the easy ones. Don't forget about the swing pass to Pierce that was dropped too... as Martin Lawrence said in Bad Boys II.... WOO-saaahhhhhhhhh

Most JC's would be here for at least 2 years!! hardly "short term". Moran's passing has been shaky at best in scrimmaging.

WOO-saaahhhhhhhhh I don't know, there were two, maybe 3 well thrown balls that were straight drops. 7 for 20 is still a crap completion percentage.

Do you think Moran is the first true freshman QB to look shaky in his first few scrimmages? Calm down guy...

I'm just saying, you can't really apply the YOU HAD ONE JOB meme to a qb in this offense lol Yeah, this is definitely not Erickson's Spread (that's the actual name of the offense he brought in, we are now using the "Spread Option", just to clarify). Anyway, I heard Derek Anderson in an interview one time saying that Erickson just tells him (DA) to just throw it downfield (didn't matter what the coverage was or the result) lol, that's some pretty detailed coaching there, good grief! DA wasn't known as the most cerebral QB anyway but he was fun to watch and could absolutely wing the ball downfield. That's where DG is really good, seeing the pre snap look, knowing what play to put them into, adjustments in pass pro and where his reads/progressions will be set up. Where he's obviously struggling is the execution of the throw with accuracy. It would be nice to see him get consistent time in the pocket though where he's not rushed or even touched. I know-pipe dream but it would be great to see if he would actually settle in and even gain some confidence. I think his confidence is shot right now (for many reasons). Go Beavs!

I'm just saying, you can't really apply the YOU HAD ONE JOB meme to a qb in this offense lol To be sure, I believe one of the larger reasons Seth Collins lost his job wasn't just his attitude at times. He was pretty darn rotten at making option reads. Garretson runs it well. He is savvy and tough. for sure. But his weakness is a pretty glaring one. and one that is very easy for defenses to game plan for. Given the choice of one dimension, I'd prefer to be one dimensional passing savvy. Just more options there to succeed with.

Erickson is given the credit for his single back spread and its popularization. Erickson himself credits Jack Elway for his inspiration while serving as his OC at San Jose State. Mike Price was influential as well. Fun reading on Erickson's offense, history and other awesome stuff... and a topic I was going to bring up later on this board (constraint plays). smartfootball.com/offense/the-original-one-back-spread-offense

My thought on Moran is he's going to need some time to develop too. I think this team can be competitive next year, and I'd like the QB to be moderately seasoned, WITH the ability to complete the forward pass. I loke Garretson's moxie, I think MM is a quality back-up. Not sure about Blount whatsoever, think he just had a balls out quarter and would struggle mightily for the other 40 something he has to play. There has to be a kid playing at the JUCO level right now that is better than anything we have on the roster, because what we have on the roster right now is not good.
