1. 2013 63 2. 2024 62 3. 2011 61 4. 2016 59 5. 2010 58 6. 2006 55 7. 2005 54 8. 2012 53 9. 2008 52 10. 2015 50 11. 2009 48 12. 2014 47 13. 2007 46 14. 2017 45 15. 2019 44 16. 2018 42 17. 2023 36 18. 2021 35 19. 2022 23 20. 2020 14
Second-worst defense in the past 20 seasons. That said, like in 2013, the defense looked better beginning with game 40 than before game 40.

I'm not saying this defense is great, but to determine best to worst ranking, a much deeper dive is required. Like UZR or FRV. Sacks on first down where the offense gets a first down anyway count the same as a sack on third down that stops a drive, but they are two completely different levels of impact on the game.

Not to minimize the error stat, but many things factor into evaluating a defense. For starters . . . 1. The official scorer 2. Field conditions 3. Ball Park dimensions 4. Speed and Range of the defenders. 5. Prevailing weather (hot, cold, windy, etc.) 6. Spray charting and the shifts

So are we thinking poor coaching, lackluster effort/concentration by players, or both?

We are a solid defensive team at Goss with Trosky at third and McDowell in center. Other variable is catcher position. We conveniently forget that in 2018 in Omaha we were less than steller defensively on some opportunities and made multiple outs on the base paths. If the current team continues to pitch as we have in the last five games we win it all.
