The title should say they won the 'b' division at Pre-nationals (Indiana State)
On September 30, they were at Notre Dame for a large invitational. results.deltatiming.com/xc/2016-joe-piane-nd-invitational/results/1 They placed 19th out of 23. The majority and maybe even all of those teams are regionally ranked.
Cross country scoring is simple but unique to team sports. Low score wins. A team has seven runners and five score. 1st place gets one point, 2nd place gets two points and so on. Your sixth and seventh runner can beat other teams runners to lower their place.
So at Notre Dame there were 157 runners on full teams. Our places were as follows: Emily Weber 52nd, Juliana Mount 61st, Kristiane Width 66th, Lexi Reed 123rd, Samantha Lewis 136th, Sam McKinnon 149th, and Nicole Goecke 154th. We ran Sara Christianson in the open race (less competition, less stress) and her time in that race would have placed her about 90th in the main race. Another good thing about OSU's effort is that we moved up significantly in the last 2K. It looks like we ran smart. If Christianson would have ran with the team, we would have been around 15th out of the 23.
On Saturday OSU was back in Indiana at Indiana State for a meet called Pre-nationals. Indiana State is the host for the NCAA meet. The meet was split into an A and B division. I wish we had ran in the A division. We won the B division. The A race had 39 teams and the B race had 25. Projecting our times into the A race gives the following places: out of about 290 runners, Emily Weber 43rd, Kristiane Width 110th, Juliana Mount 130th, Lexi Reed 207th, Sara Christianson 208th, Samantha Lewis and Morgan Anderson around 250th and 260th. That would have placed us 29th as a team - out of 40.
Width has been direct regarding the team's goal and that is to qualify for the national meet. Nationally, cross country has nine regions and a total of 33 teams qualify. The top two from each region qualify then there are 15 at-large berths. The west region will likely get five to seven. It's a long shot, but not impossible. We have three runners that would be top five on all but the elite teams. We need to get two and really three more as it seems like someone generally has an off day. Christianson is close. I've not seen her run but if she can hang with Width and Mount she will be there. Reed is another freshman and she ran her best race of the year on Saturday. I thought McKinnon would be in that caliber but she has slipped since the opening meet. Coach Sullivan said she and Goecke stayed in Corvallis and continued training. Anderson is arguably our most talented runner, but is a very weak racer. Anyway, it's nice that we likely will not be last in the Pac-12's this year. That is the next meet, October 28th in Tuscon. NCAA regionals are November 11 in Sacramento. They will have to beat some very strong teams there and at conference to build their resume.
