Every organization and baseball writer has an opinion on this one, Georgia's Charlie Condon has numerous NCAA records in his sights, and MLB Scouts say Oregon State's Travis Bazzana is the most complete hitter in college baseball. Condon's Georgia Bulldogs are 35-12 on the season, Bazzana's OSU Beavers are also 35-12 on the season. This weekend, Condon hit 3 home runs in Georgia's series win over Vanderbilt, Bazzana hit 3 home runs in the final game of the Beaver's series win over WSU. It's been that way all season.
In 2024,Georgia's team slash is .306/ .440/ .601 with 122 home runs - Oregon State's slash is .298/ .423/ .556 with 90 home runs. Comparatively the difference is .08/ .17/ .45 - not much separation there, two of college baseballs power packed lineups.
Condon is having an epic year at bat but our guy compares very favorably at the plate. In 47 games Condon has made 232 plate appearances while Bazzana has made 225 PA's in 46 games (he missed a game). Condon has 83 hits in 181 official at bats while recording 41 BB with 10 HBP. Bazzana has 68 hits in 161 AB while garnering 59 BB plus 5 HBP. Bazzana has reached base 132 times while Condon has reached base 134 times playing in one more game and with 7 more PA's. Bazzana has the better record of the tell-tale statistic, OBP. That stat supports the Scouts' assessment of Travis' plus plate discipline.
Condon has struck out 35 times in 181 AB's or 19.4% of his AB. Bazzana has struck out 24 times or14.9% of his AB. Condon has a K:BB ratio of 1:1.18 while Bazzana shows 1:2.50. Condon is very good, Bazzana is exceptional.
Condon has amassed an impressive Total Base count with 250 this season. He has hit 16 doubles, 1 triple and 33 Home Runs or a HR every 5.5 times at bat. Bazzana's TB count is excellent 158 with 16 doubles, 4 triples (well hit singles stretched into triples with "Bravado on the Basepaths"), and 24 home runs. Bazz homers every 6.7 times at bat.
Condon has 69 RBI this year, Bazzana has 55 RBI. Bazzana is an accomplished base stealer (12/17 in '24), Condon seldom runs (3/4 in '24). Condon and Bazzana flash two remarkable slash lines in 2024 with Condon showing .459/ .568/ 1.105 and 1,673 OPS while Bazzana shows .422/ .587/ .981 with 1,568 OPS. Two outstanding college hitters, and both squarely in the "One-One" MLB conversation.
Defensive ability and make up are other topics, but in a nutshell, "The Wonder from Down Under" has the edge.
