"New York student athletes are some of the best in the country, and they should be able to make decisions about their athletic career without restrictions," James in the release. www.newsweek.com/letitia-james-ncaa-nil-lawsuit-1896323It seems to me that student athletes ARE making athletic career decisions without restriction, at least closer to home......

Reading is fundamental, I know, but what I get out of it is the current temporary rules in place are not good enough for the plaintiffs in this case. As I read it, according to their legal team's assertions, athletes as of right now cannot see/ engage in NIL discussions/ contracts until they have committed to a specific school. The gist of it seems to be that the athletes want to see the total offer on the table - scholarship, bennies and NIL deals being offered, before committing to any one school. Am I missing something?
If and/ or when these athletes are reclassified as paid employees, as they should be if we keep heading down this path, and have the full brunt of their tuition, books, NIL, etc claimed as taxable income - be careful what you wish for. And before someone says that books, tuition, etc cannot be taxed, I suggest congress might want to change that - for full scholarship athletes. These athletes are in a whole different category than your average college student, even students on a full academic scholarship.

Just when you thought college sports couldn’t get more screwed up, enter the government. This should go well.

Letitia James seems to be one of those who discovers wrong where none is being done and then sues to ensure her name is front and center at all times, with governorship probably in mind. This worked for Elliott Spitzer in New York, might well work for her as well. The NCAA will, of course, cave, as they've never seen a principle they'd actually defend.
The only student athletes in New York that can, on occasion, be "some of the best in the country" are at Syracuse, up in the top left corner of the state. The other 99.9% of the state hasn't had one since Lou Gehrig was at Columbia.

NYU alone has a vast history of great athletes... college, Olympian, pro. Most here know of Doloh Schayes... Ralph Branca & Eddie Yost were very solid MLB players...
Former Laker great "Happy" Harriston is not happy with this thread!
And, fellow NYU grad, Celtic's star "Satch" Sanders agrees with "Happy".

Part of campus is the building that was the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, a pivotal moment in the American labor movement.
