"Gary Payton, the retired NBA star, is out as the head men's basketball coach at Lincoln University after an unusual − and, at times, contentious − stint at the little-known Oakland, California school." www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2024/04/23/gary-payton-out-lincoln-university-oaklanders/72808933007/My best teachers in college were folks who had to work at acquiring the knowledge........the worst teachers were gifted people who didn't struggle at all to learn. My major professor was a so-so teacher, and I wondered how such a bright person could be that way - until one time chatting with his wife I learned a source of tension in their relationship was the guy NEVER had to study, so he was a distraction during dead week/finals week because he didn't need to crack open a book......ever. Just sayin' - GP probably would not understand why mere mortals couldn't see the floor as well as him - though I don't think there was tension between him and the players (especially since they apparently weren't too worried about classes and he footed their bills on the road). Go Beavers!

It would be interesting to see how he'd do as an assistant at an established school somewhere. I don't know that trying to establish a program at a school, especially at one that insists sending the whole team and coaches to away games is outrageous, is the ideal way to begin a coaching career.

Do you really think his ego would allow him to take a subordinate position?

"during the spring semester, none of the team's players were registered for classes, according to Brodsky. He said the players provided no reason for not registering for classes, did not request a leave of absence and would not be allowed to return to school".
I wonder how many classes Gary went to at OSU...

I didn't mean to criticize GP, at all. For a point guard that couldn't jump, and who's jump-shot always looked like it went off his hand awkwardly, he made the most of his abilities. Through toughness, mostly. Mental and physical. And finding ways to score, defend, and help his team. His work ethic was under-appreciated. Even when he was a freshman, his muscles looked as tight as beef jerky. He played 40 minutes and didn't tire. Ralph to his credit recognized this, and I think Ralph treated Gary differently than every other player he ever coached. I just don't think those experiences translate well to GP taking on a role as coach.
