Of our 9 losses, at least 5 of them have been by one run. Of the past four losses, 3 were by one run. And we are worried? Yes, it is uncharacteristic of Beaver baseball, and we all know that the team has greater potential than what we have seen over the past 4 games. So why worry?
Just like the team, we're letting it get to us psychologically and eat at our spirit. The truth is, when the boys start having fun out on the field again, you're going to see a mighty steamroller just like at the beginning of the year.
What really gets me is we Matt Cronined ourselves.
In 2018, Matt Cronin threw 15 pitches in Game 1. The next day, Cronin threw a great first 21 pitches. But he continued to throw into the ninth, turning a 3-2 lead into a 5-3 deficit.
In 2024, Bridger Holmes threw 16 pitches on Friday against Cal. The next day, Holmes threw a great first 25 pitches. But he continued to throw into the ninth, turning a 7-5 lead into a 7-6 lead with runners on second and third with no outs, which quickly turned into an 8-7 loss.
It was worse than Arkansas, because they were trying to win the whole damn ball of wax. Holmes being extended into the ninth never should have happened. It was absolutely not necessary. It fouled Saturday and it also took Holmes completely off the table for Sunday. Terrible coaching.
The use of the pitchers on Saturday and that game against Arkansas in Texas are the two biggest head scratchers with how the coaches played the final inning. The others, I thought were well-coached, just didn't execute.
I question this teams situational coaching. Obviously the players are great. Great recruits. They are coached up. Just need to get the coaches to use the players correctly.
