Loved watching him play any time the Rams were on TV... seemed lie a great guy, solid human being.

Tough dude, too. I grew up in the 60s in San Diego. Chargers played Rams every year in pre-season. Got to watch them in Balboa Stadium, then once at the new (now GONE) San Diego Stadium.

I was barely 10, but he was my favorite player. Not sure why, other than he was on west coast TV a lot, and his name was sort of exotic. I bought a deck of Roman Gabriel playing cards (his picture on the back) from Sports Illustrated, about the same time I bought my Walt Frazier poster from SI, which hung in my bedroom until I left for OSU. Ahh, memories.

He was the head football coach at Cal Poly Pomona in the late 70's (when they had a team).

He was the head football coach at Cal Poly Pomona in the late 70's (when they had a team). Roman Gabriel was the final coach at Cal Poly Pomona, coaching from 1980 to 1982. He then was the offensive coordinator for the Boston Breakers before they moved to New Orleans. He then coached the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, playing in Raleigh, where Gabriel went to college, before they moved to Ohio to become the Ohio Glory. On the final coaching staff of three separate teams.

Sad to see him go. One of my favorites when I was young - probably because of the cool name!
