Who are the leaders? Any? Reeder doubled. Guerra homered. Turley walked. Weber homered. Turley walked. Hainline homered. Five leaders right there. Fairly miraculous 6-2 comeback over a 4½-inning span before Bridger Holmes decided to pipe one again for the second time in a two-out span over two games. Holmes looks very human all of a sudden after looking nigh unhittable over his first 20 innings. Never going to have a great game, though, when the 1-2 hitters go 1/9, and your ace gives up six earned in five innings. Maybe wanted to bring McDowell in a little more slowly? We want McDowell to get back to 100% as soon as possible but maybe have his first start be against Portland? Dunno. Kmatz is a win tomorrow. Rubber game on Sunday for all the enchiladas. Holmes indeed "human". His first 308 pitches as a Beav...no HR, no ER. His most recent 17 pitches: 2 HR, 3 ER.

And although he's not pitched poorly, Kmatz has never beaten Cal that I can recall. Cal knows him and his stuff.

Out of his last 37 pitches, 29 have been sliders. The book is out, hitters are up there looking for a slider. The home run last night was a good pitch but the hitter was looking for a slider. Doesn’t matter how good his slider is, if hitters know it’s coming.

Pitching problems are being compounded by fielding problems. Obviously. Way too many balls to the backstop. Balls getting past the infielders or just bobbled. Drive to right center called by CF who had no prayer of getting to the ball when Turley had a bead on the ball. Lots of stuff to clean up. Go Beavers. Get the win today.

Only saw 1st inning and it wasn't looking good, had to leave, apparently I missed a lot of frustration. On to game 2.

And although he's not pitched poorly, Kmatz has never beaten Cal that I can recall. Cal knows him and his stuff. Four hits in 2022. Three earned runs. DJ Carpenter piped the second pitch in the ninth for an 8-7 Cal win. Five hits in 2023. Two earned runs. Absolutely no run support until the ninth. Kasper, in as a pinch hitter, struck out with two on the ninth in a 2-1 Cal win. They may know him, but they are going to need to put up more than three earned to beat this Oregon State team.

Kmatz in his last 5 starts (all are PAC-12 games, 2 were on the road): 30-1/3 innings / WHIP of 0.96 / 22 strikeouts, 6 BB. He is arguably the staff ace. If he can't beat Cal, OSU will be a prime candidate for the weekly "Ouch LIst"

Yeah, well OSU has made "earned" runs an almost meaningless stat as of late. Hopefully OSU can keep the mental and physical miscues to a minimum and actually make a team "earn" wins. As the still over 9 K's per is going to haunt us versus better pitching if the miscues aren't minimized.

What is a bit scary is that in 135 IP of conference play OSU has (2) pitchers at/over 20 IP. And, of the top 4 only Jacob has good numbers (WHIP, ERA, BAA). A couple other guys have to step it up as I'm not sure piecemealing it the rest of the season is going to lead to the CWS?!
