Many (probably most) athletes have reasons for entering the transfer portal that don't include better NIL deals. Many are just looking to make a step up from (for example) the FCS or G5 to a team in the Big Ten or Big 12, etc. Others are looking for more playing time. Others are following their coach to a new school. Others don't feel like they are a good fit in a certain program or school or with a coach/staff.
I think we tend to overblow the whole NIL thing because it's an easy fall back excuse to explain away why a player(s) might want to leave Oregon State.
My guess is that the main driving factor for both men's and women's basketball transfers from OSU has been the prospect of playing in the WCC.
I know many OSU fans are kind of in a I don't know if I care anymore mode but I see this situation as an outlier compared to all other schools in the country save Washington State.
And I think the OSU wbb's situation is particularly unusual because you have a team that just made the Elite Eight, finished the season ranked in the top 10 and was not losing any player from the roster due to expired eligibility.
Those reasons to stay seem very compelling. And they very well may be providing a significant pull on many players to stay. It is not lost on me that the men's program has lost a huge chunk of its roster and the women are down two at this point.
Each team is different. Baseball is going independent and I guess we'll see if that results in some losses but I doubt that it will.
Football took some big hits when Smith left and a bunch of players joined him, along with a few going to other schools (which is to be expected). But Bray also used the portal to his advantage and brought in a bunch of impressive guys (at least on paper).
So I am going to wait and see what the wbb roster looks like after it's done. I am very hopeful that Beers will stay. I have no idea about Hunter but if both stay I will be ecstatic about next year's prospects. If Beers stays (along with Dom, etc.) but Hunter leaves, I will still be pretty confident about the team moving forward.
I also believe that there will be a fair amount of pretty good players willing to join Oregon State in the WCC.
