The Portal and the opportunity to transfer and play immediately placed a heavy burden on college coaches in managing their rosters. Then, along came NIL which created additional headaches.
Now the NCAA Rules Committee is proposing the lifting of the one time transfer policy inn favor of allowing athletes to transfer as many times as they wish.
Picture Coach Smith sitting down with a player in the Portal who has played at Texas State, LSU, Ohio State and now wants to play for you, and the first thing he wants to talk about is NIL.
Sanity? We might see a few coaches leaving the business.

That’s why it’s a free for all and they are just considering lifting their rule that basically never became an enforceable rule due to a court stay.

Many people (not singling out you, Smails) criticize the NCAA for the transfer mess, forgetting that the NCAA has tried to put restrictions on transferring, like the one-year sit-out for a second transfer, but the schools or the athletes end up suing and the rules never last. I am convinced the only way the three- or-four-time transfer mess is ever resolved is on the institutional level, if an administrator with balls at school X stood up to the coach and simply denied admission to a 3- or 4-time transfer because it's making a joke of their academic standards.

I don't know about their heads, but what's going through my head is no matter how this season may end (thud, regionals, Omaha, the whole damn thing), the baseball program is going to get slammed by the portal.

Of any program at OSU baseball is in the best position. I see three reasons to leave. Uncompetitive schedule (unknown), nig NIL money (kinda tampered by the draft) or playing time. We likely lose Baz and Guerra to go with seniors MMD and Kasper. Those openings should loosen up some roster issues. NIL I just do t see as a huge issue except really exceptional players. True talents like Turley and Caraway could have already taken high draft money but came to OSU to develop into sure thing first rounders. NIL can't compete with MLB first round. Uncompetitive schedule well just have to see. If you take care of Biz the last 4 weeks of the season are definitely competitive.

I'll only disagree in that baseball is sort of a separate "creature". There is little chance for the vast majority of D1 football or hoops players to make a pro living. Also, in hoops there is very limited court time when you are looking at rosters of 13-15. Players are always looking at where can I get on the court/field to show case my abilities as most have an illusion they are good enough for a pro level. What most do not realize, there isn't greener grass elsewhere. We hear about the select few that transfer and have a huge jump in notoriety and team success. But there are 1000's that did not. Plus do these feel good stories really increase an individuals' post-college prospects or is it just one last 15 seconds? Baseball... OSU might lose some "potential" as they were not good enough or developed enough to get the PT. The most talented are draft types (who have shied from possible paydays and have one coming) and will be no matter where they go. Most of these kids will stay put in a program they know and where they also know where they fit. IMHO, of course OSU will lose some depth types, and of course to eligibility used up... but, I do not see many of the key mainstays going anywhere as OSU is an elite program. A guy like Skenes went from a very ho hum Air Force to LSU... pretty understandable. OSU doesn't fit that scenario. I think the CC guys I've seen at LBCC, recruits, and portal transfers in to OSU will keep the program right where it is. BUT... what they actually come up for a schedule will be key for the following season. But, of course just my take on a bat sh&t crazy situation...

If it were only about the money a good many of our current roster could have skipped the college route altogether. They came here to develop, mature, learn, gain experience in a successful program that teaches how to prepare, and compete daily with other high caliber athletes. Ultimately the journey will only improve their draft stock. Baseball and college baseball specifically is one of the last sanctuaries where tradition is still respected and I sure hope it stays that way for the good of us all.

If the women's basketball team is any indication you're right. Team success or the promise of future team success doesn't prevent the kids from bailing. Kind of naive for me to think otherwise I suppose. That is no longer the goal (if it ever was) for so many.

If NIL is anything like the stock market, you are going to see lots of players sell, because there is the slightest additional uncertainty more than a university with fewer unknowns. It would be great, if we can provide as much information to the athletes as humanly possible as far in advance as humanly possible. Knowledge is power, and knowledge is a cure-all for frayed nerves.

Not sure how we find quality opponents for weekend games. Teams in leagues will be booked, right?

I covered this in another thread, but you could easily cobble together a schedule even better than the current Pac-12 schedule. The trick will be to get home-and-home commitments.

That's my fear......a lot of road series during other conferences seasons. Hopefully we can get a couple of the old Pac 12 traitors to come here.

That's my fear......a lot of road series during other conferences seasons. Hopefully we can get a couple of the old Pac 12 traitors to come here. Yeah, hopefully, we can schedule Oregon. Hopefully, Cal gets a bye. It would also be nice, if Stanford gets a bye over the final 10 weeks of the regular season, and Oregon State can schedule them as well. Hopefully, Oregon State can scoop up UCLA and USC, during their bye weeks, as well. If Wazzu goes WCC, you maybe add Washington, as well. After that, there are a lot of unknowns. Nobody is really sure what a Big 12 schedule looks next year with 16 members. You are probably still going to need to schedule Big West/Mountain West/WAC/WCC teams. You could schedule more aggressively, but I do not know, if Oregon State is going to be able to pull off a more ambitious schedule. And, if you cannot get better teams over the final 10 weekends of the regular season, you are going to have to schedule a more difficult slate the February/March weekend and first full weekend in march. Also, you are going to have to find someone to play conference tournament weekend. Historically, Pac-12 teams usually looked to add a Big West team in that spot.
