Smith is quite simply NOT that much better a defensive catcher than Weber. On the other hand, Weber is clearly an offensive threat and seems effective in clutch situations. Smith is a fairly predictable liability to simply strikeout. I would much rather see Weber in the lineup on a regular basis. Smith could spell him occasionally. I don't really care either way as long as they are both getting breaks. Better to have a fresh catcher all season if they can split series and weekdays.

But, when teams do not have a semi-constant threat to steal, like Utah, it does not make a ton of sense to play Smith over Weber. Stanford has the second-fewest steals in the Pac-12 ahead of only Washington. Cal is seventh. Oregon, though, is sitting second in the conference. It might make more sense for Smith to start against Oregon. We'll see.

IMHO, Smith is far better at blocking or stopping the errant pitch. Smith is better at framing the marginal pitch. Smith is more accurate with the arm. Weber May actually have Smith on pure mph, but it is close. Weber has the better bat right now.
If a guy is on the mound who likes to bury the outside slider, the guy probably wants Smith, but he probably wants the Weber bat in a tight game.

From what I heard, Wilson had a great week of practice and they rewarded him with the starting job, at least for last weekend.
