'ya think? Kinda like our old football coach..........what was his name again? Just another one of those OSU FB HC's who left for a better job after their success at OSU. Like Prothro Like Riley (2x) Like Erickson And unlike the 3 above, Smith as a player led OSU on the field to its greatest season in program history. But what can I say? Haters gonna hate. Go Beavs! Riley left twice but left after a Civil War win in 1998. Riley's second stint, because of the bumbling of BDC, forcing out the OC after Oregon State's best offensive season in program history. Erickson and Riley both left for jobs that did not open until after the season ended. Prothro left Oregon State immediately after the 1965 Rose Bowl. The Beavs looked terrible in a 34-7 loss. Prothro was pilloried for quick-kicking on second down. At least Prothro stuck around for the Rose Bowl. Smitty left before the bowl game, the first coach at Oregon State to ever do that and had basically agreed to leave before even the Civil War. And Smitty took the best quarterback and tight end with him to East Lansing. There is no comparison to Smitty's actions and any previous coach. It is an order of magnitude more egregious. The 2001 Fiesta Bowl run was the best season in my lifetime, but it was mostly because of every single other member of the team. Smitty was the weakest link, but the other strong links around him covered his deficiencies. That is all to say that the 2001 Fiesta Bowl season happened in spite of Smitty, not because of him.

Thanks for the laugh. You proved my "haters gonna hate" point right on cue.

Weird duck in a weird family. A mediocre player on a great 2001 Fiesta Bowl team. Good riddance.
