The guys in the bullpen had to throw strikes in high school or whatever schools they came from or they wouldn’t be here. So I see it as a systemic problem that is two fold. First is the almighty search for velocity, max effect is not conducive to control. Give me a couple less mph and command and I’ll carve you up. There is a huge difference between “let them hit the ball” and make them hit the ball”. Let them implies throw it down the middle while make them implies I’m going to command the zone and if you don’t swing you will be walking back to the dugout.
Secondly there is some paralysis through analysis going on. They are making it harder than it is. If you can command the down and away quadrant and the up and in quadrant you can pitch to anyone. A wise old pitching coach told me one time “ Babe Ruth is dead son , you have to throw the ball over the plate “.

Just my opinion but you better be able to throw a decent breaking ball against good D-1 Teams or you get shelled. Few can overpower these hitters with just a FB. Throw strikes down and keep them off balance with junk. Right now we can't even seem to get enough over the plate. Now that is a real problem.

Been thinking about this and I have a few reasons to be optimistic-
1/3 of our walks have come from 3 guys - Lawson, Hunter, Reynolds.
Hunter showed significantly better command the previous couple of years (7 BB in 32 IP last year), so it's somewhat reasonable to think he's a mechanics-tweak away from getting back into form. If that happens, these midweek games no longer necessarily become bullpen games.
I think we've got some pretty good pieces - Holmes has been excellent 16K/1 BB. Montgomery has looked good in small sample size. Mundt looks to be rounding into form. Hutcheson has a .184 BAA so far. Talavs was knocked around a bit, but has been throwing strikes. Oakes had a really good outing last week at Utah.
If May comes back, we have a lot more flexibility and *should* ease the burden some on the rest of the staff.
