I have felt that in a normal year, you make a change in coaching. By normal, I mean if Pres. Cauce of UW would not have torpedoed the conference when they had a deal with Apple at about the same money they have now. But I understood the thought process of "how do you make a change now?" There are too many unknowns, how do you afford a buyout, and can you find somebody decent to take over in these massively uncertain times.
But now, I'm thinking more like, how do you not make a change. When the best players on Coach Robinson's team decided to go, it forced DeCarolis's hand. Remember he was going to continue riding with Robinson.
We have no money after two years and after Washington State, our rivals are Boise State and Utah State? The Montana State coach turned down WSU but I think they got Eastern Washington's coach.
I don't think you can continue like this. This is worse than "dead man walking" for a head coach. I'm sure Rataj will portel in the next 72 hours.
You have to go cheap and find someone who will take a chance at OSU. Whitworth won the Northwest Conference. Their coach is Damion Jablonski. He's a Gonzaga graduate (I don't think he played) in Mechanical Engineering. He then went to work for Ford in Detroit. After six years, he became a graduate assistant at Oakland University, then became a regular assistant, coached at Lehigh for one year and then went to Whitworth as an assistant. He's been in charge five years with a record of 96-35. They have won the last three league championships. Maybe you offer him a five-year contract at around 1 Million for the entire coaching staff. If he fails, you don't have a financial albatross around your neck. If he succeeds, you compensate at market value. And finally, the Northwest Conference has been very good to us in supplying coaches.

Did you mean Damion Jablonski or Haywood Joblowmi?

Now, there is a reason to let Tinkle go, he is not able to keep star players. He has done rebuilt 3 times. Time for new coach to start from scratch like Scott Rueck did with WBB.

Did you mean Damion Jablonski or Haywood Joblowmi? Only if Mike Hunt is unavailable.

From the article, “Still, we have an excellent, connected core group. Their retention and the addition of key players in the offseason is Wayne’s number one priority."
Oh well, completely failed at that. What's next?

With 8 in the portal so far, I don't see how you can keep him. It can't get lower than this situation. Out of control

I don't know the exact numbers, but I kept hearing how Utah State had a completely new roster this year and they made the NCAA Tournament. Sorry for the positivity/optimism.

Did you mean Damion Jablonski or Haywood Joblowmi? Hey! that's Polish name discrimination. Maybe he's the next Mike Krzyzewski. In 30 years, he'll retire and be known in basketball circles as Coach J.

Utah State lost 11 of 12 scholarship players. (Three to graduation. Eight to the portal.) Utah State gave one of their scholarships to one of the walk-ons, who redshirted the previous year. Three new recruits. Utah State added eight players out of the portal. Mountain West Regular Season Champions. Tourney invite and an 88-72 win over TCU. Danny Sprinkle was hired at Washington. Now would be a great time to recruit all 14 scholarship players at Utah State.
