Rintaro Sasaki, legend in Japan. High school kid who has hit 140 homers in his career. Graded out to 70 plus power. Looking to skip Japanese professional league and sign with a MLB club.

Seems like he could have gone to a JC and been drafted in one year instead of Stanford and wait for 3 (or two depending on his BD). I don't fully understand the agreement that MLB and NPB have for MLB taking players. I guess if going to Stanford helps him skirt the rules, great for him.

I don't fully understand the agreement that MLB and NPB have for MLB taking players. I guess if going to Stanford helps him skirt the rules, great for him. It’s pretty complicated. As Sasaki has demonstrated, getting out of Japan is the easiest way. Going to university means he avoids the draft. Once he has been drafted, it’s nine years until he is a free agent. Before that time, he has to request posting. If the team denies it, there is nothing he can do. If they allow it, the player has a short window to come to agreement with the MLB team. Then the MLB team has to compensate the Japanese team. If the player hasn’t yet played 6 years for the team, there are restrictions and such. It becomes complicated. If he has a future, coming here was a smart decision. Getting a degree from Stanford along the way will also serve him well if he needs it as Stanford is a recognizable university in Japan (unlike OSU or UW or Arkansas or Vanderbilt…).
