As Ryan Day’s OC. Kelly has been an innovator and is a really good head coach, but his real strength is running and creating on the offensive side. Ohio State is always plenty good offensively, but combining Kelly with Day could be next level. Of course it will depend on Chip’s willingness and ability to be in a subordinate role again.
It will be interesting to see who UCLA brings in to replace him. I’m thinking that being the weak sister football program among LA schools heading into the BIG would make that job iffy for a lot of people. The Bruins, IMO are looking at a tough road ahead. Kelly might well see this move as a step up in the conference for him.
I could care less about the conference to be honest. They will have several programs and individuals in it who I don’t have great feelings about. With the ducks just being who they are, the master traitors in UW and USC (schools that were most responsible for the destruction of our conference), MSUs coach who handled his departure from OSU very poorly, and a change in the staff for a UCLA program that is sort of perpetually confusing, the BIG holds little interest for me.
IMO, with Harbaugh leaving and Riley teams perpetually underwhelming on the defensive side of the ball, I actually think that hole is in pretty good shape to compete for the conference title right away. It pains me to say that, but if the schools in that league continue true to tradition, only Ohio State is strong enough on both sides of the ball to keep that from happening.

Just saw this, too. How bizarre! Hating Chip like I do, I am going to struggle to root for the Buckeyes. Sigh.
Yes, I also think that Hole will compete well in the Big Ten, but it always comes down to tOSU anyway.

Bizzarro world. The Rose Bowl is only a hop-skip-and a jump from the s%#t-head’s hometown. Better climate, too. He’s probably pissed. 😅😅😅😄

Now Chipper, who I have come to like, can coach and not deal with the other nonsense.
Brennan and Smith both have to be pissed this job opened up so late.
Maybe Gundy can get a few linemen or TEs to come here.

UCLA does not support their program, they play way off campus and there's just not the backing that they have for basketball. There's a reason that UCLA hasn't been good for an extended period since the Terry Donahue days. I would think Smith would be more upset over the UW opening.

But waking up in Brentwood or Westwood every morning beats the hell out of waking up in East Lansing. Especially in winter.

It's the other stuff at UCLA that you have to deal with. They don't even have 100 yard practice fields. Both of their practice fields are 80 yards.

Man UCLA is in the dumps. Imagine losing your HC to a peer school. It needs to be open season on UCLA and if Gundy is worth his weight in salt as he is advertised , we should poach them for all of our needs.

I was hoping Chipper would become the new czar of college sports . He has been pounding the podium from the beginning saying that all the other sports besides football and basketball should stay regional and let those two sports be their own entity. What do you know Chip Kelly, the voice of reason

Chipper is one of the very few who has enough money to take a $4 million pay cut and to put personal happiness ahead of salary.

I was in the slums of Santa Monica for a year and was paying out of the nose. Expensive!

Interesting article. Thanks. But I think the article doesn't focus enough on Kelly's lackluster performance at UCLA. Had he taken the Bruins to a championship game or the CFP, money would have been flowing in. It's always harder to get that cash without a decent record. I wonder if Ohio State wants Tinkle....

I will add that Chip's record might have improved $ a little, but that's not the case overall @ UCLA. UCLA fans just don't give... period. Even when I was at SC, Westwood is seen as rich public school wishing it was private. Similar type big $$ donors that spend on themselves or pet projects, UCLA athletics not typically one of them. A former teammate ending up assisting there in player ops in two sports. They had to virtually beg for anything extra and constantly hit up donors. He said there is very little former player donations no matter how successful. He told me once, "... look at all the MLB players over the years... then look at Jackie Robinson and those facilities." Have a "friend" or acquaintance that "shows" a big time facade, but really isn't? That's UCLA. OSU is by far better off when you consider our giving/facility improvements in all sports vs what should be available at a place like UCLA and Westwood/LA.
