Ironically this is what we all believed about Smith, that he felt this way about Corvallis. But the thing that seems to separate Smith and Bray is a sense of passion as it relates to their character. Coach Bray is described as "fiery" in the most positive interpretation of the word. Smith is more of what you expect from a QB's makeup, he's somewhat detached emotionally in order to not be too high or too low from one place to the next. "Ice in the veins" was the descriptor instead of "fiery". You can see how personality differences would shape how each would respond to the situation at hand. Smith felt like he needed to escape a bad situation, understandable. I think that's actually the common response. Bray's reaction is uncommon and we should all appreciate and love him for it. I agree with you about Smith. And more could be said about being inadvertently forced between a rock and a hard place. I know many here are disgusted with him and even want him to fail. I have zero bad feelings for him...appreciate all he did to elevate the program and hope he does well. I doubt we will ever know what was going on behind the scenes last year...things that were said or promises that could not be kept. As for Bray...I won't dismiss his "commitment" to OSU and stoked he is out coach. But when the AD taps you on the shoulder as the prior HC walks out the door and asks you not to get on that plane (wink wink), when you have an opportunity to become the head coach of an FBS school just a few short years after being elevated to coordinator, heck yeah.. I'm committed! No one else is knocking on my door to become a head coach and I get to leapfrog right past FCS and lower level schools as opposed to work my way up thst ladder for another 5 years. Bray certainly wasn't sticking around to remain DC at OSU. And had he not got the HC job at OSU, he'd probably be DC at USC or even MSU, I'm sure JS understood the sitch. no dig on Bray intended, I'm just saying it was close to a no lose situation once Barnes opened thst door for him to stay. Moreso than simply a commitment to Corvallis and OSU.

Smith's response may be the common response for someone who had no previous ties to OSU and who did not come in selling himself as at last being "at home" at his "dream job."
As for Bray, he could have followed Smith and had a much safer, more secure path for not that much less money. The current DC there makes 1.6 mil. Bray agreed to stay here for 2 mil, half of what Smith was getting. Bray had previously said he was not interested in being a head coach and, when asked about that, replied recently that he meant anywhere but OSU. Maybe we're all so jaded, thanks to JS, that nobody believes that sort of thing anymore.

- “Bray wants to keep the momentum we built going and he just wants to bring more of a dawg mentality to the team, because everyone who knows Bray knows he’s all about that,” running back Damien Martinez said. “I feel really good about the future of the program with Bray … we are ready to show people they won’t forget about us and that we are still very capable of competing at the highest level.
- [hhsnbn] notified his players in a Saturday morning meeting that he was leaving for Michigan State, and he and several assistants were scheduled to board a plane that Sunday for East Lansing. Bray was supposed to be on the plane.
But after the meeting, as a somber room started to go its separate ways, Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes tapped Bray on the shoulder and asked for a quick chat.
“Can you do me a favor?” Barnes said to Bray. “Don’t get on the plane.”
- “They were already talking to other schools,” Bray said, “which is just crazy because they weren’t even in the portal yet. And we were hearing about how much they were offered by this school and that school. For some of them, it wasn’t about money...
- When Oregon State announced that Bray would be its new coach, Dennis Erickson scooped up his cell phone and typed a few words:
“You made the right decision.”
It was part of a text message the legendary former Oregon State coach sent to Barnes in which he expressed his support for the hire.
- “I just couldn’t get on the plane,” Bray said. “I felt for the players in our locker room and the players that I’ve recruited and sat in their living rooms and told them why this place was so great. It didn’t feel right to leave them. I had a responsibility to this place that has taken such good care of me. Between playing and coaching, I’ve probably been here around 15 to 16 years of my life. I love the community. My quality of life here is great. Why would I leave? We have a great opportunity in front of us and we have the potential to do some great things.”
These are some of the things in the article that caught my eye. I had been wanting to know more after feeling like an abandoned dog. The hero in this whole affair, the glue in the plywood, appears to be Scott Barnes. The "tap on the shoulder" may have changed the course of the ship from a real shipwreck. Bray wasn't initially sold after he didn't get on the plane. He had a couple of prominent boosters that helped encourage him to stay and pursue the job. Yep, He was very open to what I had to say to him... psyche

Good analogy. the Captain noticed the first mate abandoning ship with the first sign of leaks as it hits rough water and wants to take the whole crew with him. Captain taps the shoulder of a competent deck hand as he's making his way to the life boat and explains he's in line for a promotion and the ship can change course and be repaired with his help. Here's hoping for smooth sailing for the USS Beav and rough waters ahead for the mutineers.

Hindsight.... There were signs that the milk maid wasnt really invested in OSU. He was pretty good at keeping things vanilla, and not giving himself away, but clearly he only cared about furthering his career. I think we mistook that for a johnny paycheck kind of mentality.....it's all BS. Bray is the antithesis of that, personality wise.....thats exciting to me. I glowingly referred to hwsnbn as a silent assassin and he even tried to assassinate his own program.........

Then Barnes asks him to stick around, or more likely, Barnes was informing him he is a top candidate to take over HC job. I believe Smith liked Bray as DC, hes not only good, but provides a coaching element Smith doesnt. Like OA said...Fire and Ice. I also don't think Smith would have held it against Bray whatsoever to pursue the OSU job. Thats the nature of the business. Smith didn't hire a DC until after Bray was hired as OSU head coach and off the market.

Here's hoping for smooth sailing for the USS Beav and rough waters ahead for the mutineers. The S.S. Jeddah? The S.S. Jeddah was a boat, steaming from Penang to Jeddah with 992 passengers (not including infants), almost all of whom were trying to complete the Hajj. Chief among them was the owner's nephew. A storm arose, which disabled the engines. The boat started to leak, and the growing storm blew away a sail that the crew had rigged as a backup plan. The boat began to list. Seven feet of water was at the bottom of the ship, and it appeared to the crew that water was coming in faster than it could be removed. After four unsuccessful days of trying to get the engines to work and with the water at the bottom of the ship increasing and the storm growing into a hurricane, the captain, his wife, the first mate, the chief engineer, and the owner's nephew escaped on a lifeboat in the middle of the night, leaving the second mate in charge. The second mate tried to abandon ship, as well, but drowned in his attempt with the loss of the final lifeboat and two passengers. The boat was left in charge of the second engineer and the supercargo (the officer in charge of the cargo, which primarily consisted of sugar and garron wood, whatever that is). The second engineer and supercargo successfully organized the passengers to slow the leak and get the boat moving toward shore. The captain, the first mate, the chief engineer, and the owner's nephew successfully made it to Aden. The captain reported that the Jeddah had sank with the loss of 992 passengers and 24 crew, the largest maritime disaster ever. Later that day, with the help of the two remaining officers, the ghost ship, the S.S. Jeddah, in a break in the storm, was able to flag down a passing ship to help them limp into Aden, three days after the captain had arrived to report that the ship had sunk. All told, all but 14 of the 992 passengers survived and 20 of the 24 crewmembers, who were earlier reported drowned.

Thanks for getting the abbreviation correct 😀 hwnsnbn What's the extra "n" for? "he whose name shall not be named" (hwnsnbn), pronounced "Hans Nubin". Although, I do like your more concise acronym. I'm probably not the one who should be making these things up :^) Otherwise, it could be Nimrod.

You could have left with dignity and not essentially left before the season was over. If you want to buy his house to take a dump on his lawn,, it will cost you $1.9 million. It’s for sale right up the hill from me.

And I can understand Bray flying to East landfill.....never turn down an opp until you've thoroughly vetted it. Thing is, I'm pretty sure Bray could've done better than milk maids DC......I mean he DID do better, but even if he didn't land the OSU HC job, I bet there would've been plenty others pursuing, at least for DC. I just didn't get the feeling Bray has a lot of respect for milk maid, especially after how he left.

I just didn't get the feeling Bray has a lot of respect for milk maid, especially after how he left. Specifically what shade...what is the context? Smith gave him the opportunity to be where he is now, no? I dont think Bray us HC of OSU right now if Smith didnt elevate him to DC a few years ago. I agree Bray would have probably landed a better DC job...which MSU is. Bird in the hand. I already mentioned USC. Maybe even the San Jose State HC job after Brennan moved on. He claims he couldn't get on that plane...after Barnes asked him not to go. Kinda easy to say after you are hired as HC. I guess I'm not believing all the hype and fluff about some sort of dedication to OSU and how this is his dream job. We heard the same thing about Smith. Coaching is a business, these guys have massive egos and aspirations too. Riley moved on. Erickson moved on. Smith moved on. Real good chance Bray moves on at some point if he has similar success. And...like Smith, if and when that happens I'll keep rooting for Bray to succeed. Likewise...if Bray is delivering 2, 3, 4 win seasons 3 to 4 years down the line. We'll see how dedicated Oregon State, and more specifically the fan base, is to Bray
