Dartmouth, or any of the Ivys, could easily drop athletics and not be seriously impacted. They would still have plenty of applicants. A Harvard or Dartmouth degree has tremendous value whether or not it has a football team.
I have always had no problem with athletics receiving some subsidy from the university's general fund. An athletic program provides benefits for all aspects of the university.
Most teams include a significant number of walk-ons, who pay tuition and fees and who would not otherwise attend the university. So baseball, for example, with 35 team members and less than 12 scholarships, generates 22 full tuition and fees for OSU.
