I came into watching and rooting for OSU when Lonnie Smith was not on the team due to some foul play with the Knicks? Who was the guy we had who had the worst stroke from the free throw line during that era?. He was left handed. Duane Allen? Shut down defender / limited offensive skill set. yes! I was so impressed with what he contributed and when he made a basket it was great.

Those were super great years. I was lucky enough to be at several games and Rob was special and fun to watch. The "Lonnie Smith" you referred to was probably Lonnie Shelton who Jim "Bad news) Barnes got Lonnie to sign early with his ABA team. All under the table. After Lonnie came to his senses and filed a legal appeal we had to forfeit several games we won, because Lonnie played, even though the court instructed us he had to play before the final judgement. Never did understand why we had to forfeit if the judge ordered us we had to play him.
By the way Lonnie's slam dunk at the end of the UCLA game is my most fond memory. Dunking was illegal at the time and everyone went totally crazy. That was the loudest Gill ever got and Ralph Miller took Lonnie out and got in his face and really chewed. Seemed like the fans yelled for 10 minutes

My apologies for misspelling Dwayne Allen's name. College stats www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/dwayne-allen-1.html45.1% from the FT line. 5.1 PPG. And yet, he played 30+ min/game (So-Sr) because he was an absolute beast on defense. Damn, I'm sounding like one of those old codgers who talked up Red Rocha and Lew Beck when I was a young whippernapper.

He would've been among the best. He, Radford and Blume were all real good at that.

Seemed like the fans yelled for 10 minutes What you describe is illegal. From the New York times, the Oregon District Court issued an injunction and "permitted" Lonnie Shelton to play. So, Oregon State played Shelton. However, the NCAA appealed the injunction, and it was thrown out by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Ninth Circuit panel that was composed for the case consisted of two Huskies and a Duck. Once the injunction was thrown out, the NCAA ruled that Oregon State would forfeit all 15 games that Lonnie Shelton played in that Oregon State won right before the 1976-77 season started. The Lonnie Shelton ruling, to me, means that teams who are playing the double-transfer players are playing with fire. There may be several forfeits soon.

I believe the NCAA said there would be no penalties for double-transfers playing this year because of the ruling.
