I think saying that there is “nothing to indicate” we have the pitching to get us to Omaha is a bit strong. I think we do have indications that we have some pretty darn good pitchers coming back, along with some freshmen studs who I see playing a pretty decent role this year. You have to remember that when we won in 2018, our starting pitching was flat out bad in Omaha with the exception of Abel, and we still won it. In 07’ it’s hard to argue our pitching was”dominant” all season (finished 10-14 in league play), and we still won. I obviously could be wrong and that’s fine, but I would be willing to bet that this year’s pitching is considerably better than last year’s, and that this will be the deepest quality pitching staff we have ever had (not the most top-end talented, but the deepest quality talent). Once we got to Omaha in 2018, Abel who was a very highly thought of recruit had come into his own. Who's the guy who comes into this season with that resume? Sure not seeing a Heimlich or a Mulholland on the returning roster. Clearly I'm guilty of a glory days mentality here, I'll admit it. It was damn fun. Hope this staff develops so we can all make that trip again. With you. When I see this squad, now, on paper, in hoping to get to a Super. I would expect CWS the following season for sure!

We all love velo and spin.
But, what is Coach Dorman looking for? The basics.
COMMAND!
Favorable counts (0-1, 0-2, 1-2) - results in fewer BB's, HBP's, WP, and having to "come in" because you are 3-0 or 3-1.
Initiating every opposing batter with strike one.
Being able to locate your fastball where the scouting report tells you to.
Throwing every pitch in your arsenal for strikes and throwing your secondary pitches for strikes when behind in the count.
Competing and fighting your way out of a jam.
At least 6 complete.

All freshmen who could be that “next man up.” Although I think Palmer has the most upside, Decremer is the one who was a higher ranked recruit than Kevin Abel was when he was coming out of high school.

There are currently 22 pitchers on the roster, not including Krieg!

Just read that Decremer is out for the year with injury, but to look out for pitchers Drew Talvas and Matthew Morrell as two other freshmen who have the stuff to pitch right away this year (along with Palmer and Segura).
Quote from today’s Oregonian piece about the Beaver pitching staff:
“Our freshman class is, like, stacked,” Dorman said. “We have really good depth in that one, some really talented guys. I’m very excited about them.”

At this point, nothing to indicate we have the consistent dominance on the mound to get us back to Omaha. Think I'm wrong? Go back and look at the arms we had the last five trips and get back to me. We have many players with proven success at the plate, love the athleticism of this group, but the pitching...gonna have to prove it. The last two times we won it all, freshman arms were key. I'm thinking Abel and Reyes and their post season performance. I think you're talking the regular season though? I would just say we have suffered some big losses and yet Dorman has found a way for the bullpen to improve throughout season and help us win a lot of games. If we stay relatively healthy and some of the young arms are what we hope they are, I have confidence our pitching will not be a liability and turn out to be a strength. I will miss Brown coming into close though.

The final question is, how dominant do OSU’s assumed starters have to be in 2024? With the power-packed Beaver offense poised to shatter a few Oregon State records, is it more of a question of keeping us in the game for 5 to 7 innings as opposed to needing a low run pitching performance every game? Certainly the front line would need to have emerged by the time of a “Super” or in Omaha. Some of the analysis done by the writers suggest getting into our Bullpen early will be a team strength. It also needs mentioning that working with a good lead from this batting order and with the OSU defense working behind you, pitching gets easier and actually becomes fun. I think this sums it up completely. Our offense should be dynamic and that gives us the chance to do a lot of pitching experimentation with room for error. I just can't see leaving starters in past 5 innings unless they are on a complete heater. Even then, we don't need tired arms at the end of the season and a competent bullpen should take care of that. The pitching numbers might be a little lower during the season, but I expect it to get honed in by playoffs when we have identified our horses to get it done.

Well, going to need 5 starters the first week of the season between Suprise and Arlington - so depth in staff going to be critical

Dorman mentioned today in their press conference that Eric Segura looks legit. 93-95 with great location. Top freshman pitcher at this time. With that being said, Laif Palmer (6’6” freshman pitcher who pumps 95) suffered a setback around winter break and is not expected back until mid to late season.

Of the Freshman pitchers, only Segura, Morrell and Talavs are left standing. Segura has to be the focal point. Corey, DeCremer, Johnson and now Palmer are all out of action.
We will need some strong innings in support from our transfer group; May, Montgomery, Holmes, Reynolds, Scott, Oakes, and Ferguson coming off his injury year.
With 11 veteran pitchers returning (May and Scott included) and our overall depth, I suspect we weren't overly dependent on any of the freshman hurlers beyond some mid-week starts and selected relief appearances. That first year learning curve is steep for young pitchers.

I keep hearing Holmes name come up as someone to watch get a lot of innings.

Talavs is a freshman who has been brought up on multiple occasions as a guy who could pitch right away at this level. Throws 92-95 consistently. Holmes, I believe, is a transfer who has legit stuff from a weird angle. Coaches and players say his pitches are nasty and he will be a big time contributor out of the pen.
