I just ran across this article: TCU women's basketball forfeits games and will hold open tryouts as program in disarray The TCU women's basketball team has forfeited two games because of a player shortage, dealing a harsh blow to the Horned Frogs after they got off to their best start in program history. It's also a major setback for guard Madison Conner, one of the best long-range shooters in the NCAA.
According to ESPN, TCU will automatically receive Big 12 losses for its games against Kansas State and Iowa State due to its lack of bodies, as the conference doesn't consider the situation to be "extraordinary circumstances."
Multiple TCU players were apparently injured in the same practice this week, reports the Star-Telegram, leaving the squad with six scholarship athletes. The school has now asked for full-time students to show up for an open tryout in a desperate bid to preserve their season.
In order to be eligible for the open tryout, entrants must pass a physical, be a full-time TCU student and have high school basketball experience.
TCU wrote in a statement: "Games vs K-State and Iowa State have been cancelled due to injuries within the program and in the interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes.
"Fans who purchased tickets to Wednesday's game against Kansas State may exchange them for tickets to any remaining home game based on availability.
The school added that per NCAA policy, the forfeits will only harm its Big 12 record but not affect its official overall 2023-24 record. TCU was meant to face Kansas State on Wednesday night and Iowa State on Saturday.
"Heartbroken for our players and fans," wrote TCU's official women's basketball account on X. "We will come back stronger from this."
The automatic defeats will drop TCU to a 1-6 conference record. The Horned Frogs began the season 14-0 - the best mark in their history - and won their Big 12 opener against BYU. It's been downhill since then, however, as Conner entered a shooting slump and the team fell to Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas and Houston.
It's not yet clear the specific injuries that occurred in training. Jaden Owens announced she had torn her ACL this week, but there are additional players unavailable for undisclosed reasons, preventing the team from playing.
The Horned Frogs have not said whether Conner, their second-leading scorer and best outside shooter, is among the competitors who went down. Conner has played in all 18 games so far this campaign, averaging 21 points per game and shooting 40.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, leading scorer Sedona Prince remains out, having missed the past three games. Conner and Prince both transferred to TCU ahead of this season to play under newly-hired head coach Mark Campbell.
They held NCAA Tournament ambitions, but it may be difficult for them to reach March Madness in the wake of the forfeits.
