Hearing that former OSU president John Byrne died today. Good man who enjoyed and supported athletics to the degree it was possible in his era. However, he did nix Dee Andros's attempted hiring of Dennis Erickson in 1984-85 and eliminated the marching band one year. Given the budget cuts from Measure V, he probably did as well as could be expected. He graduated from Hamilton College, a small, respected private school in Clinton, N.Y. It's unusual that Hamilton is in Clinton, but Colgate is located in Hamilton, N.Y. scarc.library.oregonstate.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/presidents/byrne/byrne/

I would see Dr. Byrne on campus and he was always very talkative with students and he would go to different parts of campus when he was out walking around. Also saw him a lot in the MU commons.

Byrne had the unenviable task of following MacVicar, a man who did his DAMNEST (word?) to decimate the AD.

However, he was the guy who eliminated our men's track and field program. RIP. Dr. Bryne, followed an OSU president that only tolerated sports and rarely if ever supported them. It was a long climb out of the abyss after McVicar left.

He did me a solid at the beginning of my career.
Dr. Bryne left OSU during the Reagan Admin to head the National Oceanic Administration. He was basically an undersecretary in the Department of Commerce. While he was there I was in a masters program in public administration that required an internship. I was involved in ASOSU while he was at OSU so I walked in to his office to ask for an internship. I imagine I could not get in the building today. He was out so I left my contact info with his secretary. On the elevator ride down I stood next to one of Bryne's Assistant Secretaries. Probably noting I was on Bryne's floor he asked what I was there for. I told him I was seeking an internship and explained my background. By the ground floor I had my internship. Every time I hear a reference to an "elevator speech" I think of that moment. When I left my internship I returned to Bryne's office with a draft of a recommendation letter I wanted him to sign. I had different options for various superlatives so he could strike out those that were over the top. He struck a few and I handed it to his secretary to finalize for his signature. He was a good egg in my book.
