THE HEADLINERS: Junior Elijah Hainline (Washington State) is a plug-and-play shortstop with an All Pac-12 track record. The 5-foot-10, 181-pound righthanded hitter made 45 starts as a true freshman but 2023 was his breakout year. Hainline hit .337 with a 1.045 OPS, including 12 home runs and ten stolen bases. He will pair with Travis Bazzana to give the Beavers one of the nation’s best middle infields.
Aiden May (Arizona) is the volatility play for OSU. The 6-foot-2 junior righthander will run his fastball into the mid-90s and the slider is a devastating out pitch on the right day. That said, May struggled for the Wildcats, pitching to a 6.33 ERA over 16 starts. While his .313 BAA was problematic, he consumed 75.1 innings for a regional team. May’s high-octane arsenal may play better in a high-leverage relief role. Regardless, this level of arm talent is always welcome.
CONTRIBUTORS: Grad transfer Kyle Scott (Cal Poly) is a veteran college reliever with 65 appearances and 101.2 innings pitched. 2021 was his best season with the Mustangs (2-2, 3.91 ERA, 46 innings in 24 appearances), but the righthander did post a career high strikeout rate (26.2%) last season. Junior college transfer Bridger Holmes (Feather River CC, Calif.) offers low-90s velocity from a sidearm slot. If his command ticks up, he will be another solid piece in an already promising bullpen.
Fellow righthander Tephen Montgomery (Iowa Western CC) features a plus changeup and his frame (6-foot-4, 193 pounds) suggests there might be more in there. 6-foot-1 junior Chase Reynolds (Linn-Benton CC, Ore.) is a classic pitchability righty who could pitch in a multitude of roles. Kellen Oakes was Reynolds’ teammate at Linn-Benton and the 6-foot-3 righthander is coming off a big summer in the West Coast League
