Passing of an old ball coach

Don Read was at PSU when I was a kid, growing up in Portland. My dad's name was Don Reed, so one evening during football season, there's a phone call at the home for Don Reed. Dad picks up the phone and the guy on the other end of the line goes off, could hear him ten feet away from the phone. After a minute, he stops to catch his breath and my dad says, "I don't give a damn if your kid plays or not" and hangs up.

I always imagined that there were some interesting conversations the next day. Every time I heard the name Don Read, I remembered that phone call. It was great.
