Not a surprise. He's known the Duke coach since grade school, I believe and Duke lost out on their top target.

Not to mention just a slight difference in academics if that is what he is looking for...
I am hoping we are going to land Johnson... the more I look into his career and skills, the more I like him.

Players generally aren't very concerned about the distant past. I hate to bring up facts but in the past 10 seasons, Duke has 7 winning seasons and Oregon St. has 4. I don't think we are in a position to run down other programs history.

Last two seasons at Duke have been decent - They had some close losses to some good teams this season. The fact that they are firmly in a conference and have some of the best academics in the country might have been the edge they had.

Other factors:
Negative recruiting: "Oregon State doesn't have a conference" or "They're headed for the MWC". Not true, but effective creating doubt.
NIL: Did Duke offer Murphy NIL cash?
Academic reputation: Duke is an excellent school.
Recent QBs: Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard.
