Is Trent Bray that much better at recruiting than Jonathan Smith was? Ever since Smith left and Bray got his feet under him, it's been fantastic. We had 5 commits yesterday! I think Wednesday is gonna be a big day! I like what I'm seeing outta so far outta Kyle DeVan, Ilaisa Tuiaki, Coop, Hoop and Perkins. And the staff isn't even complete yet!

Mainly because Bray was a recruiter nearly his entire career. Smith was never a key recruiter as an assistant. And, merely the "meet & greet" the important guy with the final say.
All the "dirty" work to attract, evaluate, communicate, sell, was 90% staff like Bray.
I could take or leave JS other than I thought he assembled a very solid staff in most areas. It's why it was key for him to win the approval for the MSU move. If he doesn't get his key guys on board he was truly behind the 8-ball.
And, as of now MSU is struggling to land much beyond those recruited to OSU. If he doesn't go at least 6-6 recruiting will probably fall to the lower tier of a top heavy conference. JS will need every break he can get over the next couple years. Hope he enjoys the $ cuz he doesn't have the "hometown hero" worship to fall back on. He and his staff are B10 outsiders so he better win big games quickly.

Lots of recruits but most seem like MWC level but I guess that's what we are now. We were regularly beating out big schools the last year or two for recruits...

MWC level as far as they all would be good gets for the best teams in the MWC? Sure. Doubt that anyone they are getting in the portal would consider playing in the MWC as opposed to Oregon State. If Bray and his staff close the deal with a name QB (from a name school I mean), everyone is going to look at this class as a pretty massive success.

We were mostly getting 3/3+ star recruits with some 4 stars sprinkled in the last couple years. Most of our transfers and recruits are 3/3+ guys the last few days. Maybe a little bit of a drop off from the last 2 years, but considering Bray has done all of this in a two weeks is pretty impressive. Keep in mind that OSU is a program that lands solid 3 stars and then develops them the old school way. If Bray can get one of these QB's to transfer in and add a good receiver we will be sitting pretty good. The real test and barometer will be next year's class IMO

As far as 4 star high school recruits go, the only 4 star commit Smith had was Howard, Chiles became a 4 star after the commitment. People have been griping about us competing with the MWC and the WAC for years. Smith an Co did pretty good on transfers, it'll probably take a couple years before we have a decent idea on how the new coaches are doing. I agree, what Bray appears to be putting together in a very short time is pretty impressive.

Players mostly want to play where they are valued, where they enjoy the culture, where they believe the coaching staff is fair and where they believe they will find playing time. NIL applies to some, but not the overwhelming majority of kids in the portal.
If it were just about "playing at the highest level," then no P5 school would have kids leaving. Instead hundreds are leaving P5 programs and they are not all going to end up at P5 schools next year.
Just noticed Velling has committed to MSU. Good luck. Another one of those phony "I'll be a Beaver forever" guys I won't give a second thought to.

Lol... is there a label that states "MWC talent"? Curious... you know OSU's typical classes were 8th 9th or usually lower in the Pac12 pecking order? Two (?) classes ago #109. Far below MWC/G5 to tier. So far the HS kids are pretty identical and we may (wait until they enroll) have the best overall portal class. No super stars on paper, but we'll see how they play. Can't compare how portal guys who have played too those who haven't seen the field. But, as of now, a pretty well rounded group in areas of need.

The amount of recruits u take weighs heavily on the class ranking. I think one of those years we took a pretty small class.

Although it is all a hill of beans as "who" recruits a kid influences the rank of individuals those inflating or deflating rankings.

Regarding WR’s I’m not sure how bad we need a portal guy. Bolden, Valsin and Card return. We also signed 4 other WR’s in last year’s class who are still here. Hatten, Reddicks, Wells and East. All of whom are between 6’0 and 6’2. Throw Noga in there and we’ve got options. Edit- forgot to add Malachi Durant who is verbally committed in this year’s class. High on him. If less than a few of these guys turn into good players, how good of a recruiter was J Smith? I’m optimistic that some of these guys will turn into some serious weapons.

Most of the guys aside from bolden have little to no experience. I do like Valsin tho and I can see him having a big game in the bowl.
