IMO, a big reason why not to do a reverse merger with the MWC even with some Pac-12 money coming. No one in their right mind makes a decision as important as the future membership of their conference based on women's basketball. Or baseball either, as much as we might like it at OSU. The decision is based on football. Period. Oh, I know football is by far the main reason. It's why I'm absolutely against a full reverse merger with the MWC. I'm not forming any of my opinions on the future of Oregon State athletics based solely on women's basketball or baseball or any sport other than football. But the potential damage to the other sports factors into it. So yeah, technically I probably should have said it's another good reason, not a big reason. Although it's big to me because I follow other OSU sports closely, not just football.

RPI this early in the college basketball season is good for a few yucks and perhaps little else. But - as of Dec.16, there is a striking divergence re: Conference RPI Men's BB vs. WBB, regarding the PAC and the MWC.
Men's basketball: MWC actually ranks (overall) ahead of the PAC-12. MWC = 6th in RPI as a conference, and PAC-12 = 7th.
Women's basketball: PAC 12 is #1 in RPI as a conference...MWC is 17th. Interesting to me (and me alone?). Not sure of all the data and dollars, but I know a MWC team played in the national championship game last year

We already have a really over paid WBB coach. Why would that matter? Based on what exactly? Rueck is like the fourth-highest paid wbb coach in the Pac-12. I'll admit I've had doubts about him as far as his basketball philosophy goes but his overall success is undeniable. And I would like to see how this team winds up doing because I think it has some pretty good potential. Rueck has been trending down. Sure he had his runs in 2014-2019. But it is a what have you done for me lately world. Everyone has a different bar for overall success.
All time record at OSU.
262–132 (.665) Overall, 131–95 (.580) In Pac-12

I think Rueck is going through what Casey went through. Casey built his first teams on Northwest talent. After the first CWS championships, Casey started getting hot recruits from all over the country, and on paper it looked like he was building a dynasty. But those teams consistently underachieved. It took a few years for Casey to refocus his recruiting again, concentrating on being the #1 choice for NW recruits and taking on west coast players that he got to know well. Our recruiting classes aren't ranked as highly by Baseball America, et al, but the winning ranks pretty well.
I think Scott fell into the same trap. After those Final Four and Elite Eight years, he was able to pick up recruits from all over the country. On paper, we had some top 5 recruiting classes. But those players didn't all stick and many underperformed. A few have worked out very, very well - thank you, Talia and Raegan. But I noted that our top recruits this year are both in-state girls of Weisner-esque character, and I wonder what Scott might have learned from Pat.

Then you must be very happy with Scott, seeing as how we are undefeated.

I think the idea that Rueck's teams began to falter because he started to bring in high level recruits is pretty much a logical fallacy. I've gone through this in other threads, but Rueck has always been successful due to bringing in high level recruits. Jamie Weisner, Sydney Weise, Katie McWilliams, Mikayla Pivec, Aleah Goodman and transfer Destiny Slocum. Weisner is Canadian, Weise is from Arizona. Marie Gulich is from Germany and did not have a rating. Pivec is from Washington, McWilliams and Goodman from Oregon and Slocum is from Idaho but was at Maryland. Taylor Jones and Kennedy Brown left due to the pandemic (according to Rueck). We know Sasha Goforth's story. Greta Kampschroeder just didn't pan out. It happens. So really, this theory really just boils down to Jones and Brown leaving. And let's look at the current roster. Talia is from Washington. Beers is from Colorado. Lily is from Wisconsin. Marotte is from Texas. Adlee is from Texas. Gardiner is from Utah. Dom is from the Czech Republic. Rees is from Australia. I guess we'd better throw in the towel right now. Every school recruits players from the immediate area. It just makes sense. But it's nonsense to start turning up your nose to anyone who plays outside of that area. If you have a shot at a top recruit that plays 2,000 miles away, you take it.

Everyone gets jacked up for a final four appearance then in conference the real competition occurs. I would like to know what Judge Smails thinks because he made the initial reference to being over paid.

The year before, they played Michigan, Notre Dame and Villanova. And playing those teams did not help them much. They went 13-18 last year and 17-14 the year before. They're 8-0 this year and will almost be guaranteed to be 10-1 if not 11-0 going into Pac-12 play. Win half of your Pac-12 games and you've got a good shot at the NCAA Tournament.

That is the 2020 data, y'know, COVID-19 3/4 of the regular season and all postseason (where the real money is made) lost kinda deal? Oregon State earned more than six time the revenue in 2022 with no appreciable increase in expenses. Baseball breaks even on the books (i.e. earns a real-life profit but cannot claim that without endangering its funding) almost every single year, absent a COVID-19 kinda deal. Oregon state and LSU are the only two profitable baseball programs in the nation. As wilky points out they purposely spend just a bit more than they bring in on a regular basis. But OSU baseball does cover it's own costs. Pat Casey bless his effort built that program through fund raising and blood, sweat, and tears!
