10 years, 700 million. The west coast version of the evil empire As a lifetime Dodgers fan, I can’t agree with you there. This is great news for me. However, I will say that every time I’m tempted to whine about the privileges that Uncle Phil affords the ucks, I am confronted with the reality that, were the Beavs the beneficiaries of his deep pockets (and he did help keep Casey here before hole resurrected baseball)I would be far more than fine with it. We see time and again that there is not an even playing field in sports. College athletics has always had some of the same problem, but now it’s just more blatant and it’s killing the product. Even with all of the great talent and total regular season dominance over the past few seasons, the Dodgers have just one World Series title to show for it this millenium. I don’t like it that they choke, but it is kind of cool when smaller market franchises and those that have far smaller payrolls can still win championships. For the slew of fans who don’t like the Yankees, Dodgers or Red Sox, often due to the inequity financially, this is sweet.

It was not that big of a deal. I’m sick of people saying that’s why Pat stayed, because that couldn’t be further from the truth.

As a lifelong Giants fan, I think (hope) they overpaid for a very good DH coming off his second Tommy John surgery.
But he is a great player if healthy.
And like Smails said, double farts on the idea Phil Knight kept Casey in Corvallis.

MLB is off the charts crazy...
Have no idea how the finances REALLY work, but at any of these type of deals truly pay off? Is there giant insurance policies that cover these shortfalls somehow?
Besides these, there are players being paid that haven't played for years. Some top free-agent contracts by average annual value:
1. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers: $70 million (2024-33)
2t. Max Scherzer, Mets: $43,333,333 (2022-24)
2t. Justin Verlander, Mets: $43,333,333 (2023-24)
4. Aaron Judge, Yankees: $40 million (2023-31)
5. Jacob deGrom, Rangers: $37 million (2023-27)
6. Gerrit Cole, Yankees: $36 million (2020-28)
7t. Stephen Strasburg, Nationals: $35 million (2020-26)
7t. Anthony Rendon, Angels: $35 million (2020-26)
9. Mike Trout, Angels: $34.5 million (2019-2030)
10. Zack Greinke, D-backs: $34,416,666 (2016-21)
11. Trevor Bauer, Dodgers: $34 million (2021-23
Not counting...
Harper 13/$330 mil Seager 10/$325 mil Machado10/$300 mil Turner 11/$300 mil Bogaerts 11/$280 mil ARod 10/$275 mil & 10/$225
It's not like owners don't have other employees to pay!

With the yen so weak right now, he could buy up half of Japan.

By definition, paying part of someone’s salary should qualify as “helping”. I don’t like him or the undue influence that he has had on hole athletics, but it’s his prerogative, and no way would scoff at it if OSU had been the recipient of that generosity through the years.

With the yen so weak right now, he could buy up half of Japan. Land prices in Japan are insane right now, though. I doubt that he could buy up even half of Shikoku.

I understand a LOT of this money is deferred (so we're in another Bobby Bo situation), but there IS a "soft" salary cap in MLB, so I wonder how it will affect the Dodgers payroll.
I remember when A-Rod got his 10-year/$250 million contract. It took several years before anyone surpassed that one. I suspect it will be the same for Ohtani - no one else is gonna beat that contract until 2033.
