Zach Swanson is a 6-2, 207 pound RHP from Toutle Lake, WA, high school. Swanson is an excellent athlete, excelling as four year starting guard on Toutle’s hoop squad while playing for HC Eric Swanson (his Dad). He has also been dominating southwestern Washington hitters during his baseball career at TLHS. However, it has been his athletic frame, and electric mound performances during summertime travel ball against some of the best prep hitters in the country that has the MLB scout’s attention. Performances in the WWBA World Series in Florida and the Area Code Games in California have given him helium with the scouts.
Zach was consistently impressive this summer averaging 1.93 K’s per IP in Showcase events. He is a power pitcher, relying on a lively fastball (movement) that reaches 95 mph and spin rates as high as 2,700 rpm. He has a plus curve ball that is a strike out pitch against both left and right handed hitters. The breaking ball has a tight wrap thrown on two planes (vertical and horizontal movement) . He throws that pitch hard like a slider and has a softer version of it with a bigger break. Like his heater, the breaking ball has a very high spin rate. He adds a straight change off his fast ball at 84-87 mph.
Because of the Velo and movement, there is a chance that his fastball will be a plus pitch in the future, but he’s young and his command with it is scattered at times, when he has he showed a tendency to miss the zone on his glove side. Scouts would also like to see him take about 3-4 mph off the change up velo while maintain his deceptive arm speed.
Swanson is solidly committed to the Beavers and is being projected to be an early 3rd round draft pick next June. He is currently ranked # 24 on Baseball America’s Top-100 prep prospects for 2024.
