Just curious players across the country are opting out of bowl games because they are either entering the portal or taking their shot at the next level. If a player is worried about injury why not skip the last game of the season, the last two games, three games...Tired of the "me" in all of this.

I will never blame a kid prioritizing money, stability or their NFL future over my entertainment. Particularly given how meaningless bowl games have devolved into. I know insurance is widely available to these kids, but they have all seen high profile draft picks have their value tank because of injury.

To me it really took off after Jaylon Smith destroyed his knee in the ND/Ohio St bowl game - 2016? 2017? Went from top 5 pick to 2nd round. I think McCaffrey then skipped his bowl game and was (if I recall correctly) the first big name college kid to opt out.

Can you blame them? They are being enabled by the transfer portal and NIL. Until more controls are put in place it's the wild west. As for keeping rosters more or less intact for bowl games, I'm not sure what can be done at this point. Maybe cut everyone who plays a check? Add paid-for insurance to pay out for catastrophic injuries?

This is the one thing I thought the NIL might eliminate: It should be in their contracts that to get their full NIL, they have to participate in the bowl (if applicable).
The next logical step is that when you go to the NFL and your team is eliminated from the playoffs, you just start sitting out?

Key players have some kind of "injury" and do not play at the end of the year.

It makes zero sense to risk a critical player's heath on meaningless games. But I agree, the bowl games have really degraded. Blasting Florida last year didn't mean near as much with their QB sitting out for the draft. I've pretty much accepted that bowl games no longer represent the regular season teams. The good news is that the kids playing really want to be on the field, and as a result, many bowl (especially P5, non-NC) games are more representative of the original student-athlete flavor of college football of yore.
