When I was a kid I read everything sports related that I could get my hands on and Sports Illustrated was my Bible . I even talked my late mother into letting me subscribe so I could get a free windbreaker but when you name someone sports person of the year because they are a good showman who really didn't accomplish much aside from 4 wins and who's team played a flashy game until they didn't and now players and coaches are bolting on a daily basis . For those that might think I am trashing him as a person not so , I was a fan when he was in the NFL and with the Braves in the MLB . I just think that now as a college football coach he is more about the talk and less about the walk . I always thought SI was a credible sports magazine and all about substance but I guess times have changed

Playing devil’s advocate, who else received even a third of the media noise that Sanders received? He was the year’s hottest sports story.
Does that make him sportsperson of the year? Not in my book. I think that should be Otani, year in and year out until he can’t dominate on the mound and in the batter’s box. But SI went with the flavor of the moment.

The local newspaper didn't have box scores and I "needed" to see box scores. And there were reprints of various stories and columns across the country. (What a sports nerd) It's amazing how our priorities change over time.

Sports have always been about the game for me, and I always thought of SI as being more about the “fluff” outside the game, which holds VERY little appeal to me. The games and the stats are all I’ve ever really cared about.

Hype never won a football game.

Good Lord. They hype machine just keeps churning. Over what? A snazzy 1-8 conference record for butt-naked last?
The first thing I thought when I saw that in my news feed was, "I'm telling the people at Benny's House." Shoulda known many would beat me to it....

Millions of them. It's similar to news outlets baiting for the click. Clicks matter. And viewers matter. It's the way the world works these days. Anyway you look at it, the hire was good for Colorado.

Hypocritical, but right...Colorado played for clicks.

You say that as if I condone it or had something to do with it. I don’t. And my vote still goes to Otani. Apologies. My post was too aggressive and accusatory. I did not mean to launch a personal attack. And I know that Sanders, like the hype or not, is a sports phenomenon not only for his past but for his hire at Colorado, which magically exploded media attention around the program. I do get that it was great for Colorado.
