That is just the base salary. I think some schools structure incentives in like bonuses for reaching certain milestones.

Jonathon did alright for himself at $51mil but I wonder how much of that is guaranteed and what is the buyout?
What really blew me away was the Assistant coaches $$$ pool he gets . . . $11 mil was reported. The OSU Assistants that followed him might double their salary. B1G Media rights - they are all flush with revenue.
He can give his OSU crew a healthy raise and then shop for some #3 million dollar Coordinators.

I read that the asst pool increased to $7.5 mil for him from 6 something.

Interesting figures. Michigan State had all that money this year and what did it buy them:
-4-8 Season Record -No Bowl game -Lost to Washington 41-7 -Lost to Michigan 49-0 -Lost to Penn State 42-0 (last game) -Mel Tucker scandal and counter suit
Lesson: Money doesn't equal success. GO BEAVS!!

That is just the base salary. I think some schools structure incentives in like bonuses for reaching certain milestones. Why do graduates have so much education debt? Weird Incentives like Lannings $300,000 in bonuses for spot in Pac-12 title game and also reaching 11 regular season wins. $150,000 to win a conference championship, $200,000 to win a 12th game. Participate in any bowl $100,000, $150,000 CFB bowl, $250,000 CFB semi final, $500,000 CFB final. Mind you these are cumulative incentives.
In comparison Smith had $75,000 bonus if he had won the Pac-12 championship game. I am sure some of the other coaches have some wild incentives.

Well, according to this article, "Per terms of Smith's contact released Tuesday by Michigan State, Smith is set to make a base salary of $6 million plus a $1.25 million supplement in 2024, the first of Smith's seven-year term. Following his first-year salary, Smith is set to see his annual salary increase by at least $100,000 per season and it culminates with a scheduled $7.85 million salary in the final year of the deal. Per the deal, first shared by Chris Solari, Smith's buyout for "coach liquidated" reasons would be $7 million at the end of the upcoming 2024 season and reducing by one million, then two million and back to one million per year until the end of the term results in a zero-sum buyout. Additionally, Smith's secured a salary pool of more than $10 million for his assistant coaching and support staff -- pegged at $10.75 million." Is he among the top paid state employees in Michigan now, I wonder..... Go Beavers!
