It appears this 2024 Team is loaded. If we have the Pitching we have a great chance to make it to Omaha. However after this year it looks like OSU Baseball will be degraded to Pure Money Ball. Will character and honor matter? If the whole damn system is all about Paying Players how does Mitch Compete? The Kids (Pros) will have it all figured out and will chase the money.
IMHO some idiots wrecked college sports with NIL and the Portal. Now A- Professional Baseball with the only people loyal are the fans.

Baseball is different than football...we can join the Big West and be in a great spot. Just like TCU used to be in the Mountain West.

Baseball is different than football...we can join the Big West and be in a great spot. Just like TCU used to be in the Mountain West. Agreed: BB is different than FB......As a starter, 64 teams make the playoffs, many of them not in P5 Conferences. Non-P5 conference teams occasionally make Super Regionals and win National Championships. I can see Canham leaving at some point, though. However, he's only has 3-1/2 seasons as head coach. Smith had 6 before he bailed. College Baseball / Baseball recruiting is its own animal. For example, how much NIL would have been dangled in front of Steven Kwan out of high school (ranked 178th best OF by PG)....or for that matter after his freshman season as a Beav (.215 BA / .261 OBP).
GCU doesn't even have football, yet their SS, who played 3 full seasons there was the #6 overall player in the 2023 MLB draft (the 4th college player chosen).
The above 2 examples may be outliers, but they occurred just the same.

There aren't many programs that pay more than we do. If he's motivated by money, he'll leave when one of them offers him a job. If not, he'll stay.
Unlike football, with only three OOC games, in baseball you can schedule enough hard games to make sure you are still relevant nationally.

Going out on a limb here, but there must be some people out there to whom integrity and loyalty mean something. I would like to think Mitch is one of them, but I never fail to be disappointed.

I think it's a completely different situation with Mitch. The Oregon State baseball community is his extended family and has been since the day he got here. Things would have to get really bizarre for him to pull a niner.
The bigger concern is the NIL and having enough resources to compete. More likely that Canham would go down with the ship than walk away.

Hard to tell. A lot of people didn't think Smith would ever leave. Canham is already a big time head coach who could probably get any job he wanted. Even if we move into a mid-major conference we should still make post season runs pretty consistently. However, the recruiting battles will get that much harder and if we don't have the big conference and NIL we won't get the big time recruits. OSU has dominated the recruiting trail in the Northwest against the likes of Oregon, Washington, and Washington State. Oregon and Washington moving into a bigger conference with more financial tools might flip that script. It's not an even playing field. Simply being OSU won't be enough anymore. The best want to compete agains the best. Imagine Pat Casey being at Portland. It would never happen. Different level of competition. And no I'm nost saying OSU will end up like Portland just using that as an example.

I'm planning to up my contributions to baseball, I bet I'm not alone. Could be that we end up better off than before. But we can't play a Mountain West baseball schedule.

USC & UCLA let it be known that they were leaving the PAC (in June 2022)....by August 2023 the entire league had pretty much imploded...and the writing was on the wall, even prior to that.
Yet in July 2023, highly rated HS prospect Trent Caraway (from Southern California) passed up a possible high MLB draft selection to play for the Beavs [note: due to his birth date, he will be eligible for the 2025 MLB draft, after just 2 seasons as a Beav].
He's rated as the #1 incoming college freshman IN THE NATION.
(from his local newspaper): His relationship with Canham and the program’s assistant coaches was a large reason for his commitment. The program’s track record of success, player development and fan support also factored in his decision.
(also from his local newspaper): “The passion people have for the game up there is different,” Caraway said. “The fans are there for you no matter what. They have a winning atmosphere and recruit the right guys.”
Baseball is baseball. Football is very very very.....different.

Agreed, which is why I believe we'll team with the Big West....and although the bottom of that conference isn't great, it's a good top of the conference

UC Irvine and UCSB were both really good last year and did not make a regional because of their RPI. However, Big West would definitely be better than the MWC who was ranked an 18th ranked RPI conference last year. Of the 5 conferences on the west coast the MWC was last in 2023. I wonder if we could pull off a Notre Dame type deal where football stays independent and baseball can join the BIG12 or something. 2023 RPI rank for conferences on the West Coast 1. PAC12 2. Big West 3. WAC 4. WCC 5. MWC
